Guest phonesmarts Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 this was a while ago, about 2 months, but here it goes: i once decided to turn on Airplane Mode (found under the power screen) and left it on. i turned off the phone and turned it on about 3 hours later. once it did, it loaded everything but...AN ERROR MESSAGE POPPED UP! it said: "SIM FAILURE: Please turn off airplane mode..." now it would be great if i COULD turn off airplane mode, but it wouldn't let me advance to another screen. i tried pressing all the buttons and holding them too, but with no avail. i finally decided to reboot and see what happens, but i couldnt. so i had to force the batt out of the phone and put it back in. so i hard reset the phone and the problem never came up again...(and lets hope not ever again) so, my question is, has anyone ever encountered this before?
Guest lawsonium Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 That's a good one, though I don't rate your chances of anyone trying to emulate your problem with their own phone. I know I'm not going to  Someone who has already butchered there phone might give it a go though  Matt.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Nope I cannot recreate the problem.
Guest lawsonium Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 Haha, you took the hint then   nudge nudge Suits you sir!!!!
Guest fb Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 I had it once. I kept on trying and finally got the Quicklist back again. No need to hard reset. I can't remember if I held down the key or quickly pressed the on/off button though...
Guest phonesmarts Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 ugh...it has been a while, and i never got it again (hope it never does).
Guest martin Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 Yay  I might know what causes the inability to turn flight mode off (radio on). The other clue was in pagemakers topic where he couldn't turn flight mode on (radio off) during in flight. If anyone gets this problem where the radio ABSOLUTELY refuses to turn on then try putting your SIM in another phone, turn the phone on & off, and then put the SIM back in the Smartphone. Would be interested to know if this worked. I could put together a longwinded technical explanation but it includes a bit of GSM terminology. Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest lawsonium Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 I am interested to know, why it is refered to as 'radio'. Does it simply mean that it is utilizing 'radio' waves? If you could elaborate  Thanks.
Guest martin Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 I am interested to know, why it is refered to as 'radio'. Does it simply mean that it is utilizing 'radio' waves? Yep  Data commmunication between a mobile and base station is carried by means of radio transmission. This data link is called the Radio Interface. If you turn the phone off or switch Radio Off it will initiate a detach from the GSM/GPRS networks. The phone signals the networks and the detach flag is set. After this point you cease to update the network with your location and the network will no longer attempt to page you. All incoming calls & messages will be stored. When you turn the phone on or Radio On you will initiate a GSM and GPRS attach. When the service providers name appears on the phone you have successfully completed a GSM attach. When the big G appears on the phone you have successfully completed a GPRS attach (to the SGSN: Serving GPRS Support Node). I remember a topic being posted asking why the big G is still displayed on the phone after entering a railway tunnel even though there are no signal bars :? The reason is that after the G appears on your phone it no longer has significance  If the whole GPRS network was switched off the big G would still sit on your phone like a big dummy. Only after switching the phone or radio OFF/ON would the G fail to appear as you would fail communicate with the SGSN and iniate a GPRS attach. Things get a LOT more complicated if you are not presently registed in the VLR databases. Full network access procedures are carried out. Longer story  Always-on-connection: an even longer story. It's strange but I spend a lot more time working on the 2G and 3G networks and I suppose that is why I rant on about GPRS on this forum. I learn most of my stuff from you guys. Maybe we should have a no holds barred technical corner in MoDaCo so us techies can rant without frightning people off the forum
Guest samandiain Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 I had a slightly similar thing today. I woke up and found my alarm hadn't gone off, 'cos the battery was flat on the mpx 200. I was in a hurry to go out, so popped the sim card out and put into my timeport. I put the battery back in the mpx, and plugged the charger in. before i left i decided to check where i was supposed to be meeting people - in my appointments on the mpx 200. I turned it on without the sim in, and it turned on ok, but after 2 seconds at the home screen, it displayed a message "sim failure" or something like that. it offered me the choice to press "Done" on the left soft key, and nothing else. but nothing happened pressing any key. I popped the battery out, put my sim back in, turned it on, switched to aeroplane mode, then turned it off and put in a deactivated sim. (as it won't contact the network in aeroplane mode, it'll never know it's de-activated right?) When i turned it on again it worked fine I had presumed that a like the mpx would still provide all it's non phone based functions when used without a sim inserted, but it seems not. any sim'll do, as long as you can stop it connecting. the aeroplane mode is a really nice idea - I'd use it to save on the battery when i know i don't have reception. but i daresay air stewardesses won't be to chuffed when they see you using a phone, no matter what you tell them. apologies for rambling ( and grammer/spelling) Iain
Guest lawsonium Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 martin, nice explination, thanks. Though I disagree with one point, the GPRS attach is obviously not carried out when you connect to the network (switch phone on) as the big G only appears when you request a GPRS session, then it appears and stays on. Again, thanks for the info. Nothing wrong with 'techies', they help the world to communicate
Guest martin Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 G only appears when you request a GPRS session, then it appears and stays on. Yep  but it only does this on the MPX200. Every other smartphone completes a GPRS attach on startup. It's possibly caused by the Orange version of MPX200 software ? This was causing a problems for some people when then they had the Internet connection to automatic and had period E-mail checks  http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=9760...nternet&start=0 Oh, and if you're not already GPRS attached when when you request a PDP context activation (IP connection to a service: small G) then you do so at the same time
Guest briguy Posted May 11, 2004 Report Posted May 11, 2004 i once decided to turn on Airplane Mode (found under the power screen) and left it on. i turned off the phone and turned it on about 3 hours later. once it did, it loaded everything but...AN ERROR MESSAGE POPPED UP! it said: "SIM FAILURE: Please turn off airplane mode..." now it would be great if i COULD turn off airplane mode, but it wouldn't let me advance to another screen. I've also encountered this problem a few time (including today  ) but haven't found a solution other than a hard reset. With Sprite Backup, I can restore all my programs and settings -- as long as I remember to backup periodicaly! UPDATE: Seems to happen if I have a "No Service" indication and I try to put the phone into Airplane Mode.
Guest phonesmarts Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 really? hmm...i've been using AP Mode on and off lately and this problem never occurred again. as much as i like this trend, i wont take much risks. anyway, ive been having a new problem. sometimes (not often) when i flip open the cover after periods of inactivity, the home screen, and everything else for that matter, gets messed up. the screen turns into a pixelated, multicolored screen. it sort of looks like an inkjet picture thats been rained on.
Guest abdllatif Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 I have a simcard failure now and then, the problem seems to increase. The phone suddenly has this message sim card failure on the sreen. If you don't notice you may be ofline all day. I can get my phone back working by turning it on and off. Annoying it is! Any suggestions? MPX200 2002
