Guest Pagemakers Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 Has anybody bought a anybody got an i-mate SmartPhone 2? How does it compare, software wise, to the E200, in particular T9, BT connection and Email polling.
Guest yoos Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 I'd be interested to know as well... Also, is it SIM unlocked and completely app decertified?
Guest martin Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 Hi pagemakers Have you found anywhere selling it yet ? I'm interested too

Guest yoos Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 This is the only place I've seen so far.... I've sent the following message to them today, hopefully they'll respond... ------------------------------------------------------- I live in the USA and I am contemplating purchasing an I-Mate Smartphone 2 ( http://estore.shopplex.com/app/storefront....=30214092059015 ). Before I make a decision to purchase the mobile phone I have a few questions... Any help would be appreciated! If you don't know the answers to all the questions then just say so please. I have sent the following questions to other sites selling the Voyager and haven't had any responses, therefore I haven't bought the phone yet. - There appears to be quite a few reported problems with the E200/Voyager on modaco and other websites. I'm not sure if these same problems will be in this I-Mate phone, but if I have some of these problems can I return the phone to get a replacement? I'm mainly concerned with the speaker buzzing problem. I don't want to spend this much money and have the phone buzzing in my ear... What about a refund if the phone has a lot of problems? - Is this phone SIM unlocked so I can use it with a sim card from any GSM carrier in the USA? - Does this phone have power adapters for both the USA and UK? - Do you sell car phone chargers for this phone? - For development purposes, will I be able to completely software decertify the phone? If so, how? - I would expect/hope there are software updates for this phone to fix some of the reported issues and more issues that I am sure will come about. - Will I be able to apply these future updates? - Where/How can I get them? - Will they keep the phone SIM unlocked? If not, how will I be able to SIM unlock it again? - Will they keep the phone completely application decertified? If not, how will I be able to app decertify it again? - Your reported specs say 64MB flash & 32MB SDRAM. Does that mean there is a total of 96MB RAM? I am confused on this because I thought there was only a total of 64MB. - It has been reported that the joystick can only move in four directions (up, down, left, right). This is very disappointing for gaming development. Will it be possible in the near future to have the phone I purhase from you to be software upgraded to allow diagonaly movements? - Or... is this a hardware issue? - If it's a hardware issue, will there be a newer version allowing diagonal movements and can I get a replacement? Thank you very much!
Guest yoos Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 cool, thanks Pagemakers! I've been watching that site for a while, not sure how I missed that! I'm going to ask them the same questions... *Edit* I wonder what accessories come with this Expansys phone (i.e. cradle)? Also, I don't understand what they are talking about with the memory. It's not clear to me how much RAM is on this Expansys phone: GSM Function: Tri-band 900 / 1800 / 1900; Support GPRS, Class C; Multi-slot class 8 (4R1T); Internal Antenna with tri-band support; Memory: Flash Rom; 16-bits Data Bus, 3.3 Volts; Two 16MB Flash-ROM. (Layout Reserved); 32MB: default configuration; For Stinger OS / APs, RF Firmware, and Charger / Radio Parameters (Mfg. Final Charger and radio calibration); RAM: 16-bits Data Bus with CSP Package (JEDEC standard); One 16MB or 32MB SDRAM http://www.expansys-usa.com/product.asp?code=108953
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 I have used the ROM, and have found it to be a big disappointment. The battery life is better, but the T9 has a HUGE bug, and the bluetooth implementation is no different. P
Guest yoos Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Expansys just raised the price another $70!!! Too greedy for me... They were the only site that had, well... an OK price anyways... Now their price is not that competitive and too much for me to spend on a smartphone...
Guest yoos Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 I'm really starting to get put off on the prices of these things... Expansys kept raising their price periodically and their availability said 7 days for months....
Guest dschamis Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 These guys seem to have it in stock in Canada, at a somewhat reasonable price. I'd still like to hear from someone that actually has one of these. I think, but I'm not sure, that it only has a 120MHz processor, which is pretty weak. Anyone else know anything? David
Guest partycan Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 My cousin has just bought one from expansys i've had a little play with the i-mate if you have any specific questions i'll find out off him. He's not very internet friendly or computer friendly but i'll see what I can do!
Guest glennch Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Answers in line prefereced by >>> for those areas I know about. ------------------------------------------------------- I live in the USA and I am contemplating purchasing an I-Mate Smartphone 2 >> I purchased my phone from estore and had good results Before I make a decision to purchase the mobile phone I have a few questions... I'm mainly concerned with the speaker buzzing problem. I don't want to spend this much money and have the phone buzzing in my ear... What about a refund if the phone has a lot of problems? >> Cannot speak for others but thus far after 2 weeks the only problem I have had is getting used to the keys. They are very particular but you get use to it. As to complains related to buzzing I have not had any issues. - Is this phone SIM Unlockso I can use it with a sim card from any GSM carrier in the USA? >>> Yes its SIM unlocked. I'm using t-Mobile with no problems (1900 only of course) - Does this phone have power adapters for both the USA and UK? >>> Comes with UK adapter but you can either purchase a cheap adapter from a local store or buy the offical adapter from Orange. Did not see it on their web site but their stores have it in the UK which is where I bought the adapter (about $6 US). If you email them I bet they can ship one to you if they are not on their web site. Also remember you can charge this phone via USB as well so you might not even need a charger if you drag a laptop around alot. - Do you sell car phone chargers for this phone? >>> Oranges web site for E200 has a car adapter as well as other accessories which work with Imate. Just look under E200 area - For development purposes, will I be able to completely software decertify the phone? If so, how? >>> Not sure as I have no gotten around to doing any smartphone developement yet but I did not that Sprites backup software loaded with no problem which would lead me to belive its completly unlocked. - I would expect/hope there are software updates for this phone to fix some of the reported issues and more issues that I am sure will come about. >>> I think this is a risk associated with buying a phone outside the normal chanel. One would hope that fixes would be available at www.imateclub.com but you never know. - Your reported specs say 64MB flash & 32MB SDRAM. Does that mean there is a total of 96MB RAM? I am confused on this because I thought there was only a total of 64MB. >>> Books says 64MB ROM and 32 RAM. Phone on the other hand shows 32 Flash and 18MB Program Storage of which 17BM is used of the Program store... So who knows what the real specs are and whats available. The processor is an OMAP 132MHz. - It has been reported that the joystick can only move in four directions (up, down, left, right). >>> Yep, up/down/left/right only as far as I can tell.
Guest efjay Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Hi, just wondered how the phone was performing now, i currently have a p800 and was thinking of switching to a smartphone for one handed operation and especially email sync, thanks
Guest azaclauson Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 I got an an imate 2 from tekntoys.com about two weeks ago. Its my first SmartPhone so I don't have anything to compare it to but so far in general it's going fine. I haven't tried the bluetooth and I can't get GPRS to work but I suspect that is due to Vodafone in Ireland and not the phone. Had no problems connecting to my laptop and transferring files around. Camera seems good. Battery life is average, needs to be charged every second or third day. Menus are fine once you get used to them. Internet Explorer is good. I was able to check and send email from my Yahoo account using the phone without too much trouble. The OS has frozen a couple of times but switching on and off remedies it, I wasn't expecting it to be perfect. My phone only has 16MB of RAM total. I have seen a developer version of the phone advertised with 32MB. If you are going to purchase one you may want to confirm whcih version you are getting as obviously they both look the same. Aaron
Guest efjay Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 I wonder if any imate users can post if they have any of the problems the E200 has pre and post update: sd card causing lockups, static on recording video. Maybe as the imate was introduced a bit later than the orange e200 there are a few extra refinements
Guest PhotoPix Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 I live in Sydney Australia and just replaced my aging orginal unlocked decerted SPV with an i-mate smartphone 2. It is available from most Telstra Stores in Aus for AUD$779 www.telstra.com.au (GB£320) with no sim locks or need for decerts. They even let you pay it off interest free over 12-24 months. Or try http://www.c1au.com/imate.html I am very happy with it, screen is heaps better, response time of the cpu is faster and the keypad is much easier to use. I have not done much internet surfing but it appears faster than the spv. it has lots of inbuilt software (possibly the same as E200) and has not refused any software I have loaded. Still has a battery problem....I find that if I charge the phone when turned off I get a longer time between charges> I was going to buy a used e200 next month when I am in the UK and then try to unlock it etc., but i decided that for a bit of extra money this would better and have a local warranty. Highly recommended
