Guest kjk Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 find ute where you are just for uk  http://www.txt-u.com/smartlocator/
Guest Gorskar Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Damn that looks like a must have app. When I get my e200 I will be buying that for sure, assuming the price isn't too unreasable, and it actually does what it says on the tin. See http://msmobiles.com/news.php/2097.html for more details, as they've done a short test.

Guest shadamehr Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Well, despite my cautionary note up above, I did in fact get my join up Email today. So I installed the program, and created an account. I then ran the program, and did a Live Lookup... Now I know Cell based location services are not a substitute for GPS, but what a shock I got... The service said I was located in Elswick, a suburb of Newcastle Upon Tyne, in North East England. Without getting too specific, suffice to say for those who know the area, I am actually across the river, in Gateshead, some considerable distance away. The shortest route, as reported by Autoroute 2004, from where I do live, to where the SmartLocator service said I was, is 3.4 miles. Thats a HUGE margin of error, that to me, makes the service a complete waste of time. Bear in mind of course, that I live in an urban area too, so cells should be that much smaller, and the result that much more exact. It beggars belief what sort of results this will return, for those who live in more rural areas. So I'm sorry, but its no use at all to me. Imagine if I was using this for the look-up service to check on my family or children...? I would have been straight on the phone to the Police by now... Add to this, the fact that at present I can't even buy credits to use it, as the phone link, does nothing more than tell you a website to visit with your PC, and doing so just brings up a page not found error... Also, I'm aware this is 'early days' but alas, the problem I find - how the cell location is so far of - is something that is unlikel to be able to resolve in the future anyway... So bear it in mind folks...
Guest madds Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 Hi, i live in Oporto and i the qtek importers for portugal also produce software for symbian/windows. I have seen a 7650 with a Oporto map and they use the LBS technology with very small margin of error, i would say about 20 meters (in Oporto center). so i bealive this app can surely have a great future if it's well done. The program i saw let's you even know were is someone you know, just by his cellphone number (despite you need your network to give you that info)
Guest James Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 i would only find this kind of app intresting if i could track any mobile phone........ really, why would i want to know where i was?
Guest shadamehr Posted February 6, 2004 Report Posted February 6, 2004 Hi, i live in Oporto and i the qtek importers for portugal also produce software for symbian/windows. I have seen a 7650 with a Oporto map and they use the LBS technology with very small margin of error, i would say about 20 meters (in Oporto center). so i bealive this app can surely have a great future if it's well done. The program i saw let's you even know were is someone you know, just by his cellphone number (despite you need your network to give you that info) I was given to beleive (and hence my reservations and concerns) that it is not an issue of how well done the software is, but the actual limitations of cell based location, that produces the error. Else no need ever for GPS in a cell phone. Sadly, my point was, that in my case, in an urban area of Tyneside, UK, where cells should be densely situated, and thus results exact, mine was a full 3.4 miles out exactly! And hence also my point, relating in to your reply about finding someone you know, about what this has been talked about for, is for checking on your children, and thus their safety. And as I pointed out, had I have done that very thing, I would have been terrified, and panic stricken, to think they were a whole 3.4 miles away in a different city...
Guest kalinte Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 i read in the paper the other day that this feature is actualy a required feature of all GSM provider in the states. it is said that emergency calls thru GSM mobiles should be located by the GSM provider within 200 meters or so. now this feature is not readily given to consumers but rather only as an option due to privacy concerns. just imagine your boss checking out your location every other hour. even better for stalkers.
Guest James Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 i would only find this kind of app intresting if i could track any mobile phone........ really, why would i want to know where i was? and once you have set your 'buddy' list up, you can check where all your mate are!!!!
Guest shadamehr Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Are most people getting better results than me though? 3.4 miles out is a huge margin of errror for an urban location in the UK...
Guest drblow Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 No m8, you're not the only one. I got the beta test version, and after a live lookup today the result was somewhere near 10 miles away!! I have emailed the company involved, but havent had a reply yet about it. I had problems installing the app in the first place, and have been emailing a bloke there who seems very pleasant & willing to help, so maybe this app will get better!? It is only a beta test version, and they're meant to have bugs in 'em! Granted, a locator application that has a margin of error measured in miles is a pretty major bug ... but let's give 'em a chance eh? I'm more put off by the whole buying credits thing. What if I'm not near a PC? A bit useless to have an app on the phone that you cant use without getting to a PC first! I mentioned both these points in an email to them, so hopefully I'll get a reply pretty soon & let you know.
Guest Gus Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Well I've just given it a try, and found it got my location to within about 200 metres. On the 'about' screen it gives you an indication of how accurate it thinks it was (around 650m it said). That was near the centre of Bristol, so I'll have to try again in a different place.
Guest shadamehr Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Er, I'm being brave enough to buy a few credits to test it out again. But does anyone know HOW you can buy credits? I can't find any link...
Guest James Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 get in contact with this guy:- Peter: [email protected]
Guest shadamehr Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Thanks James, but its not exactly inspiring as a means of purchasing credit. I'll drop him a line though. Ta
Guest James Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 you can now get them on-line... 25 credits for £5.88 but i can get it to accept my mastercard??? i know the card is fine.... :/
Guest shadamehr Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 I was advised to wait until Beta 2 is out in the next few weeks. The thought of paying £5.88 for 25 creds, only to find it locates me as 3.2 miles away from where I am is a bit unsettling. So I might just wait for Beta 2
Guest James Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 yeah, me too. 2 week away for Beta 2........ waiting...
Guest Griff_FFOC Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 yeah, me too. 2 week away for Beta 2........ waiting... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I was just looking at this and I can't seem to find anything to answer the question of. Do you have to buy and use credits everytime you look up where you are? Or is that just to find buddies?
Guest James Posted May 27, 2005 Report Posted May 27, 2005 everytime you use it. not sure if its dead?
