not sure if im going to get an unbiased response but... Im looking to get a new smartphone. most likely is the spve2 or nokia6600. main requirements are email etc and a bit of gaming. Im awre of some of the games and software available for the spve (which seems like a cut down PDA) but does the nokia just run java stuff or does it have stuff specifically for symbian. please dont make the response too technical as i'm new to all this! all advice gratefully received...

I've had hands on experience with both, so here is an objective +/- of both phones......

6600

- It doesnt support wav, mp3, mpeg, wma etc

- Very few programs other than standard videoplayer ones

- Only take MMC Cards

- A lot harder to sync

- No Internet browsing

- Not a very Dynamic Handset

+ Pop3 Emailing (I think!)

+ Very easy to unlock

+ Quicktime (again... I think!)

+ Java games

+ Support Realplayer files

+ Very User Friendly / Simplistic

+ Good Video Quality

E200

- Eats the Juice.....Very Battery Hungry

- Very limited Bluetooth Capacity i.e cant send files

- Only a 4-way Joystick

- Poor Video Quality

- Can't record sound and send via MMS (as is saved as wav file)

- very easy to bugger up

- Can be quite complex to a novice.

+ Plays Mp3, wma, wav's, avi's, midi, dvix, mpeg etc

+ Takes Both SD and MMC Cards

+ Very Dynamic handset

+ Absolutely Loads of Software, Programs and Games Available

+ Very Easy to Sync with PC

+ Excellent Camera/Imagine Quality (Photos not Video)

+ Internet Browsing

+ Very Customisable (Skins)

+ Pop3 Email

In conclusion, both are excellent handsets, but I have found the 6600 to have many limitations, and as such I wouldn't even class it as a smartphone.

I would however chose the 6600 over the orignal SPV and E100, but it doesn't even come close to the E200

Don't get me wrong, the E200 is far from perfect but it is a decent, powerful and now stable handset. With the E200 there is a program for absolutely everthing and anything, and if there is a problem, very often someone will do a tweak in the registery to sort it out.

In short, it has been 3rd Time Lucky with the E200........as it is a great success!

Cheers

e200 can send files over bluetooth with smart explorer.

You can only send via IR with Smart Explorer......unless you are using a different version of Smart Explorer then me?!

On mine you open Smart Explorer>Press File>Option 6 (Send & Recieve) then the following option....:-

1. Send by email

2. Send by infrared

3. Recieve from IR...

This is absolutely excellent........at last BT transfer with a freeware program......and released within the last fort-night.......a darn site cheaper than IA File Manager.

Still, it should have been part of the pre-installed Multi-Media Album (in the send to/via option) as per what the manual incorrectly states.

Another other +/- for the E200:-

- Not all programs can run because of Security Certification

+ You can De-Cert the handset quite easily

- Camera images seems to have a red tinge

By coincidence, I am using both the N6600 and an O2 XPhone (aka E200 SPV) as my two main phones.

As per the comment, N6600 does not come with built-in Internet browser, however there are numerous third party proggies for Symbian OS, e.g. anygraaf Doris browser which I personally use, that would handle that part of it for you beautifully.

Choice of games, I would go for the smartphone. A quite substantial offering already, and (probably) a gazillion more on the way. Also, the control read: game playing is more enjoyable on the smartphone platform. The keypad for N6600 is slightly less enjoyable for me than the keys on my XPhone, although that could be classified as subjective.

Conclusion? If all you want to do is play games on your phone, consider the smartphone. It has a better and broader selection of games, and the keypad is more responsive and easier to "punch" than those of the N6600.

thanks for all your help, i think im going to go with the spv... the only bummer is that its a bit bulky. also it seems that the 6600 has no usb connectivity so would i be right in saying that the only way to transfer any data between a 6600 and a PC is via a usb blutooth addon for the PC?(I.R is not really an option)... Also, what are these handsets that look like spve2 all about from http://www.ppcw.net ?

Incidentally, i cant believe orange had the audacity to release a phone capable of only receiving BT and no ability to send BT straight from the box, especially if it says in the manual it can! the nerve...

The 6600 is no more heavier than the E200. The E200 being more bulky length ways, the 6600 being more bulky width ways. The 6600 is quite flat though, I must admit!

As for the link......nothing too confusing, it's sometimes refered by it's International Name

HTC are the manafactor that warranty all the SPV Series in the UK.

So if your handset gets buggered or knackers out, and you haven't got any kind of insurance/care, Orange tell you to ring HTC directly yourself to validate your warranty.

The Internationally name for the E200 is the HTC Voyar.....

E100 the HTC Tanager..... Original SPV the HTC Qtek.....

(Think the above names are on the right one phonea!)

The new SPV is the is called the X1000 (or something similar) it's international name being the HTC Himalaya

The Himalaya is more like the Handspring Treo 600 (Basically PDA like), so not quite an "In your Top Pocket" Type of a Phone,

But no doubt, loaded with the usual PDA features, programs etc

can you buy a phone of this site directly and will it work in the uk?

Yes, but you would have to get the Sim-lock removed

Also you would have to manually put it the GPRS, MMS, SMS settings etc on as there will be no default pre-installed.

Also the language pack could be different.

......All of which are not too difficult to add or change.

Also just found out that the new SPV PDA is the M1000 not the X1000
