Guest Chrimbow Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 im new to smartphones and i am just about to buy one. reference this whole symbian V MS smartphone gaming arument. i get what java games are, but as i understand it there are games written specifically for MS Smartphone and the symbian (ie sries 60 nokia 6600 etc) is that right? disregarding gameplay as that is dependant on development etc, which offers the best graphical power and which is most likely to REALLY take of? Bearing in mind the old betamax v VHS or xbox v playstation deal. As i see it the MS system seems to have the power and capability but lack of games, but with nokia(6600) and siemens (sx1) using it for flagship models, symbain seems to be getting the all important market lead. what do you think?
Guest Croccy22 Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 MS Smartphones are still young at the moment. many opertators are releasing their own versions of these phones, and as they do they will become more popular. when they become more popular, the bigger companies will start to develop for them. And when they do the MS smartphone platform has MUCH better capabilities than the other devices. Nokia phones will always have loads of games purely coz they are popular. just a shame they are also crap Matt
Guest kristianmatthews Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 with smartphones you can download emulators for popular oldie consoles like snes, nes, gameboy, megadrives etc etc, which opens up a rather large catalogue of games :-) amongst others i have mario 3 on my mpx200 at the moment :-)
Guest ultimasnake Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Yeah i have to agree with both of you guys , the smartphone is still young but since you get an nes emulator (and roms arn't that hard to find) this means you can already play over 800+ games.. then you still got the Gameboy color games etc etc all these games are faster and better looking then any javagame at the moment..... Also if you look at game Like DOOM and Quake 3d (by exosyphen with a little help from myself) and maybe even Duke nukem 3d (still just a plans to do so) you can already imagine what games the future might bring for our pretty smartphones which java simply can't handle :D
Guest midnight Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 i like to think the future of smartphone gaming is beyond ports of old games and emulators, both of which i dont see as that great, this kind of stuff is available for symbian/palm, so isnt a very good argument for MS Smartphone gaming i'm afraid. Symbian phones arent all just Java games, several games are coded directly for the phone, not using a virtual machine, and this is why Ngage games work on symbian devices. I'm not saying Symbian is better for games, it isnt, at least, i see more potential in MS Smartphone games, and we are working on impressive games at the moment that utilise the strengths of the MS Smartphone, which will never be released on Symbian phones.
Guest ultimasnake Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 like that fight game of yours?...(with release date 2003 or so? :D)
Guest midnight Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 yup, thats one of them, and as i've already explained, i said winter 03, mistake, should have been winter 03/04, and theres still time left yet, oh, and its way more impressive than some 5fps game  delays happen, its no big deal, and while its been delayed we've been working on another game, which is due out soon, but we realised the mistake with Kumite and are not releasing any details about this game until its complete.
Guest ultimasnake Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 ahaaa..... btw is this going to payware?....
Guest midnight Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 of course, we are a games company not a charidy
Guest Chrimbow Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 ultimisnake... dum de dumm.. is it "I know what i like" by genesis by any chance?
Guest ultimasnake Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 @midnight , you are true .... though i hope you won't ask To much for games and you will have good payment systems at hand since i (and many others) don't have credit cards :( @chrimbow.... nope  its from a SF movie :D
Guest Chrimbow Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 without a shadow of doubt, it has to be space odyessy. dum dum. dum dum de dum dum, dum dum de dum de dum de dum dumm... dead easy, war film what was the original subject here? oh yeah, i geddit now!
Guest Gorskar Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 There are good games out for the smartphone, but they are fairly sparse at the moment. Then theres a whole load of average right down to the downright crap. A few recommendations: RocketElite Gold, Links, Pocket Mini Golf, Crazy Bubbles, Starblaster, Done in 50 Seconds.
Guest peekie Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 one thing to look at is laptops ok not a smartphone but within 2 years from a slow old horse with 10gb harddrive to a 80gb hard drive and a 2.8ghz speed smartphones will in a few years speed ahead if they are developed ( ok not like a laptop before anyone writes that its only an example ) the spv now will be a slow old thing in a few years time and nokia will one day release a smartphone with a ms system its only a mater of time as they want all the market and microsoft are too large for nokia to take on everyone ( most people have windows) and as the smartphone and windows get closer the bigger the gap will come between the nokia system and the spv its a betamax v vhs thing if you really look at it ( sadly the best lost in that one )
Guest phonesmarts Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 lol, peekie, i had trouble following your post...it seems to have a lack of punctuation... anyway, i think that yes the Smartphone platform is very young and needs good time to develop, but the potential is much higher than Symbian phones. I don't know about this, but is the Symbian platform games at its height? could it go further? if not, then Smartphone games could go beyond that...plus, its based on the Windows CE platform, which has PPC --which means ports. once kumite comes out, we can see the gretness of it and pave the way for more advanced games! @ultimasnake: its a SF film? Is it an old SF or new ones?
Guest ultimasnake Posted February 13, 2004 Report Posted February 13, 2004 I think the Symbian os has no future at all , it was on psion device for years and in 10 year there was no till none big progress the only real big thing back then was from B&W to color screen.... Windows mobile 2003 has also a bigger change to grow since the programming languages you can program in are huge (C,C++,C#,Vb.net) whilst symbian supports JAVA and if i understand correctly some kind of c which has little development values...... @phonesmarts yes an old SF
Guest beersoft Posted February 13, 2004 Report Posted February 13, 2004 snake, its the imperial march from ESB you could paraphrase what your saying to mean, i wouldn't buy an applemac as they don't have any market share and unless you use codewarrior and can code C/C++ you can do any development for it. symbian support C/C++ , ASM and java which is fine for development. as everyone knows real programmers use C/C++ because its fast and portable code, which is what you need on a lowpower/lowspeed device. later Owen "stupid mambypamby .net programming mokeys"
Guest Chrimbow Posted February 13, 2004 Report Posted February 13, 2004 Hmmm- vhs/ betamax, playstation/xbox, symbian/smartphone... c'mon billy (elliot)gates, get it together lad. did bill gates start betamax by any chance? Bet he thanks god for IBM every day. Speccy git @snake still say its space oddyesy
Guest phonesmarts Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 bill gates and betamax? i really dont thnk so, but the rest.... billy seems to love to delve into things that look like one side is dominating, and to be frank, hes puttin up a good fight! @beersoft, chrimbow: i dont think its SW, but it has a chance to be space odessey.
Guest R4N6ER5-RE4DY Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 As an end user, rather than programmer, I would say "ease of use" determines the fate of consumer systems. Betamax lost out 'cause it was too hard to rent films. My SPV is the first phone i've had which syncs properly, everything else it does is a bonus. So will get more of my money when I get a new phone.
Guest siu99spj Posted March 4, 2004 Report Posted March 4, 2004 @ultimasnake: its a SF film? Is it an old SF or new ones? ultimasnake had his tune guessed some time ago. However, IF you can remember what he said I'll give you some clues: Its quite a long running trilogy in 5 (Well 6 if you're being pedantic but I don't count the Holiday Special as it was so awful) parts. It recently introduced the most annoying character EVER in cinema history (IMHO). And finally (bit of a giveaway this one): I never seen 2 Danish Pastries look so cool!
Guest phonesmarts Posted March 5, 2004 Report Posted March 5, 2004 yeah its SW... spj, i like your avatar....and the whole animation that came with it...poor little birds on the wire...
Guest siu99spj Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Well just to clarufy, it was the Death March from Star Wars (Tune that tended to play when the Republic(Baddies) appeared on screen). Maybe we should start a forum competition of Dum Dee Dumming various tunes... It'll have to be in off-topic of course.
