I thought that the Motorola IMEI server was down. Is ot back up yet? Without it only the network can unlock it!

gsmlocker can do it with "their software", which i believe just connects you to another unlocker's servers to download the code. you tell them the service provider and your IMEI and they'll send you a link for the software. i ordered mine Friday @ 9.20 pm (-6 GMT) and had my code by 7.46 am (-6 GMT). the code worked...here's the kicker: it cost me $69 (US), which is about 4 times the cost of a standard unlocking service.

why does it cost too much to unlock moto phones now, about a month ago, you could buy unlock code off ebay for 9 USD, now it's 69USD. that's crazy..................any ideas?

Supply and demand - these capitolists charge what the market will bear, if someone is willing to pay $69 it is $69. If they had no takers you could bet the price would go down.

I expect it to go down pretty soon. I unlocked my phone about 4 days ago for $30.

hodula,

Who did you use? I just bought a second MPX200 for my wife and I need to unlock it. PM me if you wish. Thanks

Orange did it for me for £20. They said I had to pay up my contract (10 months) so I said no probs. They charged the £20 to my bill but not the remaining contract charges (2 months and counting) :)

I got an email back from gsmliberty, they said you have to have a "foreign" sim card in your phone to unlock it. How/where do you get one? borrow it from someone else?

Update. Today I received an email from GSMliberty requesting my IMEI. That was at about 12:30 GMT-7. I responded at 5:39 GST-7. It is Friday so I am sure they are finsihed for today in Montreal. I will keep track and post when I recieved the unlock hopefully next week.

On the foriegn sim question.

You either need to borrow a friends GSM SIM from another carrier, say T-Mobile (Great GSM in the US) or decide on a new carrier, eg. T-Mobile and order a new SIM. That is a "foriegn sim" Any sim not from ATT WS. The sim would not need to be an active number or anything. Just not from whoever you bought the phone.

Do not bother entering the unlock code without the foriegn sim. It will not ask for the unlock code.

Since we know unlocking is available you could order a new GSM 1800/1900 service and be pretty sure it will work. T-mobile will send you a free phone with the new sim on a one year contract. Once you unlock and have the new service, than request the new provider to port your old number. This was done in 24 hrs between ATT and T-mob for me on my first MPX200.

Thanks for the info. I'm not ready to switch, but i would like to have the phone unlocked just in case i want to switch or sell this phone.

If you get an unlock code from a reputeable vendor you are ready for the switch. Once again you will need a foriegn sim. Good Luck

To avoid any confusion a foriegn sim is not one from another country but one from a different network (i.e. not yours!) :)

thanks for clearing that up mcwarre,i was just going to ask that question.

so in thoery i could use my virgin sim in my orange mpx and get it unlocked?

if you dont need the number to be active whats the reason for needing a sim from a different carrier?

Yep, once you have the unlock code you put in another sim and it will ask for the network unlock code. Enter that and hey presto.

Reason for different sim is perhaps cheaper calls at certain times or free texts or you just have better reception on a different carrier. It also means if you have a work phone you don't need to carry two around with you.

Look here for my triple sim adapted MPX200 :)

so this doesnt unlock the phone to all/any network just the carrier of the sim thats inserted then?

i'm off to Thailand soon and i need it unlocked for all networks or I've got a flashy mpx thats not going to work......

Once you have SIM unlocked that's it it will be unlocked for all networks.

Does an unlock code expire? I don't have a "foreign" sim card right now. If i get the code, can i wait?
