Mitac Mio 8390

Hi,

I've been thinking of upgrading for a while now, and the Motorola MPx220 has been the phone I've been waiting for. But I've been looking at the Mitac Mio 8390 and it seems to be just what I want. But I've been having trouble finding information on this phone, so it would be great if someone could post a summary of the specifications of this phone, and also any news on a release date (I've heard it's Monday).

Thanks,

Matt

hi there,

i'll get mine on monday or tuesday directly from taiwan. a limited amount of handsets is available there already and i am happy enough to have friends there who take care in it for me. the price is around 400 euros plus shipping and tax, so you end up a little over 500 euros at the end depending in your tax system.

more details regarding that phone are here: gsm arena

i'll post a review around tuesday - stay tuned.

cheers, lutz

hi malte,

yes it has, but just as an extra on top of the standard letters/numbers. so you'll find what you need on the keys.

Thanks for all the replies and the links. This does seem like the phone I want. I was always dreaming of owning the 8380, but that phone did have a lot of problems (size, some apps refusing to run), and I hope this is all solved in this phone. The 8390 seems to have everything I want and I can't wait to read some reviews of it.

Any other comments or links on the phone, then please post.

Thanks,

Matt

hi matt,

the problems of the mio 8380 where fixed by the fantastic revised roms of @nonymus, so all that was really sucking on it was the size. if you check the link above you see size and weight and can compare it to the mpx, which is in my eyes the most sexiest and handsome smartphone with ms os at the moment. the 8390 is not much bigger and heavier and because of the fact it comes with 2003, more memory and integrated cam it is my choice for the moment. that will definitly change on the day someone is bringing a wm2003 with cam and bluetooth!!! and i will buy it - as long as it is not from htc since i will never ever again play their beta tester. so the mpx220 will be my choice.

try google for dozends of links...

Lutzh: On the page You linked to is says that the 8390 supports SyncML. Is that correct? If so, is it added by Mitac?

Mattscholey: The camera in the 8390 takes the best pictures I've ever seen from a cellphone. Great colours and no purple hue like the SPV E200. The only downside was focus on far away objects, but I gues that goes for all fix-focus lenses.

This is great, as a built-in camera is the main reason that I want to upgrade. I've seen a picture from it too, and they do look fantastic (considering that it's from a phone).

I want one of these, but I really want to know that it will be better or at least as good as the mpx220 before i buy.

@ malte,

yes i've seen that too about syncML, it must have been added by mitac since this is usually more a symbian feature i am very couriouse to see if and how that works. i'll tell you on tuesday when i have it here...

you can see the chinese letters upon the keys on a pic below...

meanwhile i'll attach some pics my friend in honkong passed over to show me whats in the box and how the thingy looks... he made the pictures with his "old sharp gx22". you can see very clearly how thinn and smooth the 8390 is compared to the old 8380 from mitac. enjoy it, you'll get a full review from me next week including my well known little movies.

Lutzh: Thanks for the great pictures. Mitac seem to add cool features that Microsoft refuses like Java on the 8380 and now SyncML on the 8390. I understand that these are competing technologies but it wouldn't hurt Microsoft to be a bit more humble towards the market they're trying to get into. Like SP2002 not supporting MMS - What's that about? The should ask "what is the consumer expecting" instead of "how can we make it look like desktop Windows"... Sorry for drifting off topic, needed to get that out of my system. It is a stunning phone and like You say it looks very slim. On the early pictures it had a rather bulky clip-on battery but that seems to have changed. Is the battery still clip-on?

Mattscholey: The Mpx220 is still 90% rumours but if they're true then the biggest difference will be Bluetooth.

nice pictures shame that phone is not over here in europe to buy as it looks nicer than the motorola ,(which looks a bit of a womans phone and has been voted her as the womans phone of the year) , same goes for the samsung also not in europe maybe in the future both models will come nice to see the photos have fun and lookforward to your review on th phone:wink:

Looking at Mio 8380 and 8390 in front of me, yes It is thinner then Mio 8380, but other dimensions are same. By the way to take out battery is much more difficult then on Mio8380. When Moto is near it (8390), yes this phone is still for a MAN!

So this is THE state-of-the-art smartphone then ?

Any chance of Orange taking it on ?

Can it be unlocked to run an Orange SIM ?

Suddenly the MPx220 doesn't look so attractive...

stu! why the hell do i always answer your posts?????????????????

i would say its a decision of taste. i have it here and i have to say that my first impression is that i will stick with my mpx200 till the 220 (or how ever it names is) comes out. why? the mio is (in my eyes) very taiwanese. plastic feeling. very soft flip mode. size is better than from the 8380 but the making is the same....

Well no-one is forcing you to answer my posts, lutzh !!!!

Sorry if my pathetic questions are too trivial for you.

And I thought you had promised an in-depth review of the Mio with pictures and specifications and comparisons and everything :?

Oh well at least I can stop saving up my Euros now :)

BTW (OT) : have you seen kjk's posting in the Sprite thread ? Have you done a restore to your MPx yet ?

just kidding, stu!

i've promised the review for tonight and i'll deliver as soon as i am at home! but as said - i'll stick with the motorola anyway...

You could be looking at £245 + P&P (or air fares etc) at £1 = $1.8 (according to lutzh's site) but you can get it for a lot more on ebay :?

I know that the price of Mio 8390 is just around US$ 400. Isn't it more cheaper compare to 6600 and Sx1, But with more features.
