WINDOWS folder - odd files taking over the phone...

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on this problem:-

My SPV has been really slow over the last few days, but today I received the 'low on memory' message and was unable to send an SMS. I checked out the folders to see if I could delete anything and came across some odd files in the WINDOWS folder. Examples are...

Busy.0407.mid

Busy.0409.mid

Busy.040c.mid

Busy.0809.mid

...but there are lots of other files with these same hex numbers in the filename. I've tried deleting them but it tells me 'File is located in ROM'.

I haven't loaded any apps on the phone for ages, but just before this happened I did try to Backup with the new Backup/Restore Tool (spit!) needless to say it didn't work, and I gave up after a couple of tries.

Does anyone know what these files are? I've tried rebooting to free the files but they are not being released. Currently the phone is unusable for anything other than Smart Explorer !

Anything in the /Windows folder isn't worth messing with, as if you do manage to modify/delete them, they are restored the next time you reboot your phone.

If your phone is low on memory, then you need to free some space in the IPSM folder- if possible, move anything you can to the storage card.

I was under the impression that deleting any file from the phone itself would free up more room for the IPSM folder, or does that have a set size ?!

Also seems odd that I have 5 versions of certain files, each version of which appears identical to the others except for the filename. I'm just wondering if these files appear as part of the Backup process as I don't remember ever seeing them there previously, or are they part of everyone's Windows ?

I've checked and those "busy" files are in my Windows folder too- although they are tiny 63 or 87 bytes each- I imagine a text message would take up more space in the memory! (From the .mid filename extension, I would guess that they are just the sounds for the engaged tone or something.)

What is the memory problem you're having- is it that the phone is low on physical memory, or that it's low on storage space (ie. IPSM space)? If it's the first, then I don't think deleting files will affect anything- it's the programs you are running that take up space. If it's the second, then simply move whatever files and programs you can to the SD card.

Thanks for checking.

The phone is low on IPSM space (down to my last 370K now after deleting some sent messages), but I'm not sure what apps are stored on the phone (as opposed to the SD card) as the remove programs list was cleared after an non-scheduled Hard Reset, stopping me from deinstalling anything.

If you did a hard reset the IPSM would have been wiped, unless you ment

a partial reset?

 Have you been filling IPSM with lots of skins / themes / backgrounds / ringtones? Take a look in IPSMApplication DataHome or Sounds, and see what you can clear out!
