Guest James Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! The price of a pint goes up by 10p from today - and that is before any budget rises next month.Landlords are warning the increase threatens the future of pubs - with many people choosing to drink at home. Rural pubs could be the worst hit with many facing closure. The move comes following a a decision by American brewing giant Coors, which produces Carling, Grolsch and Worthington, to increase prices from today. Tony Payne, Chief Executive of the Federation of Licensed Victuallers says the increase is one of the steepest he has seen and represents a real threat to the pub industry. He fears it is likely to extend the drift of people away from pubs to home - where they're drinking cut price supermarket beer. It could also result in the closure of many pubs already experiencing hard times. He is also critical about Coors timing of the increase - shortly before the budget, where he expects a rise in duty to further increase the price of a pint. It is likely that other brewers will follow suit and increase their prices too, but a spokeswoman for Scottish and Newcastle, producers of Kronenbourg and Fosters, said their customers would be the first to know if they were planning such a move. source: www.yahoo.co.uk
Guest Disco Stu Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 Well I drink Guinness so I'm not too worried yet. Also, perhaps it'll keep students out

Guest meatgrinder Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 oowww, the gits :), not soo good :'( Dave
Guest Disco Stu Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Is this definately all being passed onto the customer ? I'd expect the breweries to introduce some promotions to soften the blow. There's some irony in the timing though. Just when they could be preparing to chuck us smokers out of their establishments they go and empty the places anyway :!:
Guest kelv23 Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 I'm with the black stuff gang on this one. We were discussing this issue at work today and the usual outrage was being vented about prices going up and up,we should be used to it by now they never go down do they? If you want cheap beer then just go to the local Wetherspoons but you'll have to put up with all the students and other tax dodging gits who when the budget does push prices up even further in aid to fund them will be hanging around moaning about how hard life is.Irony anyone?
Guest Disco Stu Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Sorry, I didn't intend to turn this into a student-bashing thread  I was one myself once, and my local is a 'student' pub. Any news about the other brewers yet ?
Guest James Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 not that i can see..................... might ask at my local
Guest kelv23 Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 although that was a sweeping generalization funnily enough my local Witherspoons is mainly frequented by students and people who claim cash from our beloved social security office only to piss it up the wall.nothing against students really, the university brings much needed international and homegrown totty to an otherwise ugly neighbourhood.(all complaints to my PM please.)
Guest kelv23 Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Sorry, I didn't intend to turn this into a student-bashing thread  I was one myself once, What made you give up student bashing ?(sorry, being pedantics a pastime)
Guest Disco Stu Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 What made you give up student bashing ?(sorry, being pedantics a pastime) Arf arf :) :D I drink in a Scream pub, mainly because of the plethora of screens for watching the footie. And the Guinness is in excellent condition. And it's close enough to crawl home. And it's full of student totty...
Guest kelv23 Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Whats a Scream pub? sounds like I could be setting myself up for some sort of witty retorte to my last reply..... Guest kelv23 Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I'm with you on the double vodka's though.Has anyone else ever tried a shot of Port in a pint of Guinness?
Guest Disco Stu Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 No, but are you recommending it or warning us against it ?
Guest kelv23 Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Recommending it.Not had it for a while. The Irish geezer who ran a pub near where I used to work gave it to me once.Maybe the mists of time and the fact I'd already had a few may have clouded my memory.I'll do a full spec test on this subject and provide a review if I go out this weekend.....
