Guest pisquee Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Just recieved an email from "[email protected]" the subject was "unknown" the body text was "here" and there was an attatchement of "release.scr"
Guest LarsDK Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I just got one from [email protected] with an attachment named final.zip, in the zip was a final.exe, both of them checked by my virusscanner and came out clean. The message of the email was: do you ever feel the same... dont know if its virus but its definitly strange....:-/
Guest pisquee Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 i think [email protected] is even worse, as it is a name definately associated with modaco, whereas ashley is not - I authorised the email through spamarrest.com as I trusted the domain ... Outlook is blocking me accessing the file to find out whether it actually is a virus, but does seem strange.
Guest kalinte Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 now since the spv is operated by windows, can you actually run a virus on the phone? if yes it has to be made specifically for the phone. rigth? coz activesync automatically converts file into spv format.
Guest LarsDK Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 My virusscanner updates every day at 8 o clock and it didnt find anything, I just ran another update and got a new update file, ran a complete test and found 48 infected files, it must be this one it cant be anything else..... The virus is the I-Worm/Netsky.B SO BEWARE !!!!!!!!!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 The virii that are going around at the moment spoof mail addresses, so although these appear from us, they are not. P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest LarsDK Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 The strange thing is that the flash movie clip about the mpx220 is also called something with the word final in it, so I thought it was something regarding that... 54 infected and counting
Guest benzo Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I think the spoofed MoDaCo email addresses may have something to do with the PaulMVP] imposter. Judging by his profile (now deleted), he had a grudge against MoDaCo/Paul.
Guest Taoski Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Heres an example of how virus spoofing works. The virus is on "a PC" who's address book has got an address in for [email protected] or someone @modaco.com. The virus emails itself to another address in "a PC"'s address book pretending to be from an address like [email protected]. So when u get the email - it looks like it is from [email protected]. Also - any viruses detected in the message by an email server will send a message back to [email protected] telling him he sent the virus. Pesky critters aint they. Make sure you are belt and braces protected with antivirus software and all the latest M$ patches etc..... blah blah blah
Guest Coucou Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 If by chance you are using Orange e-mail over the internet here's a handy tip, hover your mouse over the sender's name. I got one from '[email protected]' a while back, hovered my mouse and in my bottom icon bar it said something like '[email protected]'. And if you actually open the e-mail (not the attachment) and hover your mouse over the sender name it will say 'java script:[email protected]'. Both show that it's not really from who it pretends to be from. Other e-mail programs may do this to.
Guest pisquee Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Paul, sorry if i implied they were actualy coming from modaco.com, i was merely posting this as a warning to say they were not from modaco, and to beware of opening them i.e. don't trust them on the fact they appear to be from modaco. Is there anyone with the email address of [email protected]? what other spoofed addresses have been used?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Yeah, that is awarner... The simple rule is don't open any attachment you weren't expecting - without exception, have auto updating anti virus, stay windows updated, and don't believe what a mail tells you about it's sender! Guest nedge2k Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Tip for orange.net users: when you block a sender, a confirmation window pops up with the real address. Useful in finding the culprit.
Guest [email protected] Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Anyone found the MPx220 flashfiles to be infected?
Guest siu99spj Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Its NOT the flash file which is infected. Someone thought it was related to based on the filename. However, I have inordinant number of bounces from ntl E-Mail support (With probably the weirdest E-Mail EVER btw), claiming I'm sending them viruses. Considering I was only using Yahoo webmail at the time, I find it hard to believe I sent somehing. even moreso when I don't actually have anyone with an ntl address. Therefore, spoof addressing is very annoying...
Guest beersoft Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 the way the spoofing works is: it picks a random email address from the address book and internet explorer cache then sends emails out saying its from one of your random emails to another random email. i seem to have a large nuber of "you sent me a virus email" and "550 user not found" messages later Owen
