Guest ncolli1981 Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Hey, I have just taken delivery of a Hagiwara sys-com 128MB SD card, I have an orange SPV e200, when i try to copy data onto the storage card i get the error message "Cannot convert file ------ A device attached to the system is not functioning" does this mean that the card is not compatible ???? or can i fix it ?????
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 What are you trying to copy? and do you have the card in a card reader or the phone when you are transfering?
Guest ncolli1981 Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 I am trying to copy mp3 files and .jpg files, the card is in the phone, i am using usb cradle link, I have been able to copy files onto the 8mb card that comes with the phone.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 I would try and format the card first of all, Binarys Task Manager enables you to do this on the phone. To download go to www.monolithix.org
Guest gixer599 Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 I also have an SVP E200 and have a similar problem with my SD storage card when using it in the phone on the cradle. when I try to transfer data to it or even just make a new folder I'm getting a message saying I cant access the card, it may be locked or read only blah blah blah. The card worked fine in my original SPV, so I sent it back and got it replaced with a new one. Guess what! That does the same. Got another phone and it does the same. Active Sync works a treat. Help!
Guest adamos168 Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 my friend has a different problem.. he just bought an E200 and it seems his 128MB sandisk sd card won't work on the phone.. it was 2nd hand so when he asked the previous owner, he replied it worked with his panasonic sd card. My friend then borrowed my 256MB apacer sd card and it doesnt work too.. the E200 don't seem to detect both of our sd's. Can anyone help me with this? thanks..
Guest deepak Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 i have bot the panasonic and sandisk 512 mb card and i keep swaping them on my xphone as and when i want.... The main rule here is that u need to format your card first using your laptop or built in software as task manager....this will get it working for you without any hassles....SD card of all make and kinds work on all smartphone and windows mobile phones without any hassles.. Also please check for the lock on the card...as at times u may have just locked the card which then will not allow u to copy anything on the device. On active sync if while transfering any file say that it need to be converted for access just say yes as in real case with mp3 files and most others leaving word and excell it does nothing to them and copies straight. The best possible way is to use an sd card adapter for computer and load all the data straight into it in proper files the way u want it...if u dont have the adapter a little slower but again a sure shot way is to click the explore button on active sync dialogue on your computer after the device is showing connected.. Once the explorer window open it will show u an icon called smartphone ..double click it and you will see in amongst files STORAGE CARD....now click on this and keep this window opn on your computer and then start dragging and droping files....
Guest wilky Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 Also you may find that dual layer SD are not read by the SPV. I have a friend who has had a problem with a Kingston card and they have email from him saying "I have had problems with getting a bigger SD card to download programs to mp3's etc. However after much buying and sending back to Ebuyer I have had a reply from "Kingston" tech support. I mailed them about the item I had bought and that I couldn't write anything to it. Anyway to cut a long story short, (too late!) there are 2 types of cards, a dual level cell (DLC) card and a single level Cell (SLC) card. The latter is the type you need, however, how do I tell the difference as they don't advise on the web site. I hear you ask?" And thats the problem as it stands you don`t know whether you are buying a dual or single layer however as dual layer becomes more and more available I think we might see more of these problems.
Guest makem Posted February 25, 2004 Report Posted February 25, 2004 Yeah, I had a very similar problem. I got a 512mb Viking SD card and I couldn't write to the card via the cradle, I was gutted to say the least. I can write very tiny files (8k or less) and directories and delete files, but cant write file large than 8k ish... As a work around I use my 8mb SD that I got from Orange and install apps on that and than copy them on to my 512 card via a 6 in 1 card reader. Not ideal but at least I can use the card. Could this problem be addressed in a future update???
Guest Posted February 25, 2004 Report Posted February 25, 2004 Hello, YES ! I can verify all findings ! I purchased myself a 256 MB SD Card from Viking. Was cheaper than other famous brands like Sandisk or Lexar. Shouldn't have done that, saved at the wrong place :-( Just every other file got saved without an error message (cannot access card or so) and largeer files like videos or JPGs couldn't be saved at all. I tried to format the card with various programs on my notebook and iPAQ and in various ways. All seemed to work well, yet the phone had severe problems in accessing the card (perhaps the cardslot or the driver is not flexible enough to handle out-of spec samples, don't know). My iPAQ 5550 could handle the card (tried it out with an adapter and a jacket, as I have a 512 MB card in), but I think that all writing operations are rather slow compared to my Lexar. So I hated myself for trying to save a few Euros, went to the next PC dealer and asked for either a Sandisk or Lexar card and told him I would buy it on the spot if I could try it out and it worked. He just had Sandisk on stock and they worked brilliantly (and I bought it). Upon noticing my Qtek 8080 (which he'd never seen before :) he told me that he no longer orders SD cards other than Sandisk and Lexar ("they are the best on the market and observe all specs"), because he had so many customer complaints with the cheaper brands and especially with the no-names. He spoke about phones, the Nokia Communicator (guess it needs a Multimedia Card or something like that) but also iPAQs and some digicams. He confirmed that he never had complaints with no-name CompactFlash cards. I think this is information worth knowing and I hope that no one out there learns his lesson the way I did. Regards Gerhard
Guest daniel darky Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 Has anyone tried a 512Mb SD card from Scan? (www.scan.co.uk) I'm thinking of getting one, they are usually good for PC stuff, but not sure if their SD cards are single or multi-cell...
Guest iliant Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Posted from my SmartPhone! I don't know about the kind of experiences you had with no name sd cards, but I had no problem with a hama mmc card while my Sandisk sd crashed big time! While I was trying to copy some mp3's and I had filled it up to 2/3's it showed me a circular error of memory or something like that and it erased the whole card leaving only the speaking clock's file in there... Strange right? I then formatted the card and tried to fill it up again but that error came up again... I did a couple of times and then suddenly neither the card reader or the phone could read the card! What do u have to say about that guys? I am going to take it to the company's service in a week or so but I don't know if they can replace it as I leave in Greece and the card was bought in Dubai and the receipt is gone...
Guest muza Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 I just got the sandisk 512 from scan and it works a treat 8)
Guest shadamehr Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 LISTEN UP GUYS (yes I'm shouting 'cos I'm tired of this being ignored or overlooked...) For the UMPTEENTH time on here, there is a known fault with the E200, whereby SOME SD cards won't wortk with it - Viking, is one such example, though it is meant to apply to any MULTI-CELL SD card. This manifests itself in the form of readily being able to write to the card in a dedicated Card Reader, and ALSO happily READ from the card, in the phone. But as soon as you try to WRITE anything to the card within the phone, you get the error mentioned in this thread. Orange are supposedly aware of this, and the forthcoming ROM update ALLEGEDLY fixes it. So PLEASE - all you regulars, take this in, and remember it - cos I am tired of seeing comments like Deepak's up above "SD card of all make and kinds work on all smartphone and windows mobile phones without any hassles.. " when this is absolutely not true, and an already known fault to Orange. So please guys, spread the word - cos I've lost track of how many times I have posted this on this forum. Also, newbies MIGHT consider doing a search first, as its well covered.
Guest Samaritan Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 The message you are getting "cannot convert file ---" I also get with my jessops card - which is actually a toshiba card - as is the viking cards that do the same thing. The reason is that apparently the cards use multi cell storage - instead of single cell storage and the SPV cannot write large files to this type of storage. You'll probably find you can write small files, probably less then 8kb's to the phone no problem. Damn incompatability to hell
Guest ncolli1981 Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Problem sorted, I have purchased a viking card reader from amazon for 10 whole english pounds, works a treat, I can copy the files over to the card on the reader and the phone has no bother reading them, Nice.
