Guest jmcglynn Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 hi, i have an e200 and sync with active-sync. my company operates a kind of hot desk policy so i might be on a different pc each day. is there any way to sync by recognising my outlook profile rather than by recognising the physical pc? (Palm Hot-Sync allows this) . new to this forum and the phone - both are great! just need to find an answer to this problem and i'll be flying! best regards, jim Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest mvsmith07 Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 First of all, ActiveSync MUST be installed on each PC you wish to sync with. If this isn't a problem and your computer use policy will allow this, great. I wonder if your equipment department might start to question what this Activesync application is if they start to see it on a half-a-dozen or more PCs mind! Each time you connect to a new PC you've never sync'd with before you will have to set-up a new partnership. Once you've been to the PC, set-up Activesync and the partnership you should be able to revisit the PC and plug the phone straight in. You have to remember which USB port you had the phone plugged into as well because if you use a different USB slot a new partnership will be need to be set-up! I think it may be some hassle to maintain this. You need to have your company change from desktop PCs to laptops. You should each have your own personal laptop and on the desks should just be a docking station! Send it in as a wishlist item!
Guest jmcglynn Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 thanks mvsmith07. I actually only sit at 3 or 4 pc's, so I exagerated a tad ! You're right, ActiveSync popping up on all PC's would probably end up with me having my limbs removed ;-) I could have a laptop, but I choose not to as I'd like travelling light - that's why I use the E200 (and previously a Palm Pilot). Few questions then on your : Q1: Can I have as many partnerships as I want ? Q1.5: Won't I end up with duplicate contacts and appointments all over the place (as many people seem to experience frequently, and I experienced when initially syncing with my home Pc and my work PC) ? Q2: I thought ActiveSync only allows e-mails to be sync'd with one of the partnerships, is that incorrect ? Q3: I seem to remember one of the instructions during setup saying something about only being able to sync with 2 pc's ? many thanks in advance. jim
Guest mvsmith07 Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 You're right, that'w why I get duplicate appointments and contacts sometimes. I hadn't thought of that! It's because I recently had to re-setup my partnership and of course it re-sync'd data. I think if your partnerships are stable duplicates are few and far between. Of course, with Microsoft nothings ever permanently stable so there's always that chance of a muck-up in the future. Have to be honest and say sync'ing emails isn't my expert area as I don't do it. You are probably correct with regards to only allowing one email sync. Someone else may be able to shed more light on this. Can't remember the two PC limit in any of my configuration set-ups. Perhaps because I only do sync between two PCs, work and home, I've been lucky never to encounter this problem. Somehow I think it looks like a none-starter having now discussed the options more. Shame to be limited in this way I suppose.
Guest jmcglynn Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 Is there any other software that can sync these phones? I like ActiveSync as it seems reasonably realiable, but really would like it to recognise the user logged onto the PC rather than the physical PC.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 You have to remember which USB port you had the phone plugged into as well because if you use a different USB slot a new partnership will be need to be set-up! Not quite, because of ActivsyncUSB bug I have to swap ports occasionally this keeps the same partnership and does not create a new one.
