Guest wayazo Posted February 25, 2004 Report Posted February 25, 2004 A newby here with an i600. I'm wondering if anyone has had any success getting any of the skins found in the Customisation topic to work on the i600? I found one home screen in .hme format that did load up, however, none of the CAB files or files containing the active synch install software seem to work. I keep getting an error message saying that I have insufficient privledges and I should contact my service provider. I contacted Verizon and spoke with a Tier 2 support tech who told me that you cannot change the home screen or other screens. You must use the ones that came with the phone. Is this true? Can you just load a new home screen skin and forget the other screens? If so, can you tell me how to do this? There are a number of alternate skins in the Customisation forum that I'd love to try out on my phone. Also, for anyone waiting for the 2003 Smartphone upgrade for the i600, this tech told me that Verizon is testing the upgrade now and it should be available in a month or so, no firm date. Thanks in advance, Bill
Guest XRay Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I contacted Verizon and spoke with a Tier 2 support tech who told me that you cannot change the home screen or other screens. Inconceivable! A tier 2 tech told you that? That being said, home screen customization can be as simple as installing a set up that someone else has written, or it can be about as complicated as you'd like to make it, depending on how 'custom' you'd like to get. If you just want to put some other images or colors in, you can download the SmartPhone theme generator here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/res...egenerator.mspx If you want to alter the layout (shortcuts; plugins; etc), I'd suggest you download and experiment with some of the files here and decide how deeply you want to get into it. You can alter, or combine some of the xml code if you're careful. As far as the insufficient priveleges error, that surprises me, as I've loaded several of the homescreens from here on my i600 with no issues. Have you run the patches from the Samsung site, including the HKCR reg fix? If not, you can find them here: http://www.samsungtelecom.com/support/mit/ Hope this helps, and welcome. Jay.
Guest patag Posted March 5, 2004 Report Posted March 5, 2004 I'm having the same exact issue as Bill. When I try and load a homescreen CAB file, I get the "insufficient privledges" error. I was able to install a *.HME that worked. Can anyone explain the difference? Does anyone have a list of what is currently working / not working on the I600? If not, should we start one?
Guest jfk0121 Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 For another 2 cents: I just got off the phone with tier 3 ?? support at Verizon. I was unable to get an evelope in the top left corner of the screen indicating VM. It worked OK with email and sms. The tech had me change me homescreen to VZN full layout and I now get an indicator in the middle of the screen telling me I have vmail. Still no envelope even though the manual says I should have one. As far as I can see, Verizon has done their usual, take a good thing and screw it up. Why should I have to use the Verizon screen if I don't want to? It's enough to make me get rid of the phone and use a different carrier.
Guest eazygolfer Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 I have been downloading homescreens (.cab & .hme) from a variety of sources. I have loaded them via direct install of the .cab or via self-install in the homescreen script. All have worked on my i600. There can be a bit of coordination issue between 'home screen layout'/'color scheme'/'background image' but I have never received an privilege violation. Can't help you with the specific problem but maybe you can kick Verizon in the rear about trying it on a different i600.
Guest Santa Fe Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 Forget asking Verizon. Connect your phone to your PC via ActiveSync Click the explore button in ActiveSync and navigate to the ISPMApplication DataHome folder Copy the skin file to your phone in the ISPMApplication DataHome folder, Click the left soft key for programs, select settings, select option 4 for Home Screen, chChange the Home screen layout to the name of the skin you just copied, change Color scheme and Background image to Default, click Done. And if you are having trouble installing a .cab file just: Connect your phone to your PC via ActiveSync Click the explore button in ActiveSync and navigate to the temp folder Copy the .cab file to your phone in the temp folder Open the File Manager on the phone Use you arrow keys to navigate to the temp folder and press the left soft key to bring up the List View Use your arrow keys to navigate to the .cab file you installed there and click the blue action button The installed will launch automatically Select if you want to install the software to the phone or to the storage card (this is only an option if you have a card). When the install is done select OK.
