Guest nickcornaglia Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I really have to hand it to everyone on this site. Where else could you go and get your questions answered by 1000s of other users in a knowledgable, friendly, & selfless manner. (Seriously!) I've been to other types of forums and most are full of people hollaring at eachother, dissin' the newbies, or just there to win a contest. You have to hunt for hours just to get a fraction of the information that you were looking for. People here are really passionate about their Smartphone interest. Helping newbies. Participating in discussions. Developing new ideas. Reviewing software. Posting News. All with no other incentive or reason than because it's their interest or even their passion. This really is a smart group and the help you give others is worth it's weight in gold. Microsoft, Orange, AT&T and various software developers can only dream of being able to help its customers the way this site has helped and continues to help & support them and their products. Modaco should be getting paid for this service as the Smartphone definitely would not be what it is today without Modaco. Congratulations Paul on creating a great site. Congratulations Everyone on making it what it is today! :) (whew....where did that come from??? )
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Too right! Perhaps MoDaCo should be sponsored my MS or have official support areas for service providers such as Orange. It would save lots of people from having to call 150.
Guest mcwarre Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Hey, Maybe Paul & the site should take over tech support from Orange / AT&T / T-Mobile & O2 for smartphones. Just think of all that money and, more importantly, it won't take 5 working days to solve your problem :) :D
Guest [email protected] Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 MS should definately have an area here. By my experience of their own Smartphone forum I'd say they wouldn't be opposed to it. Here they would find... ...people who are here because of a genuine interest in the platform and its success. ...people who are very supportive of newbies and prospective Smartphone buyers. ...people who have vast knowledge on the platform. ...a forum that is well kept and moderated. ...a forum that is growing rapidly. Try finding that at Microsofts Smartphone forum!
Guest drblow Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I second all of that encece!! & what a good idea it would be to have an MS prescence here. Maybe we could tell them a thing or 2 about how to work their phones! :)
Guest kelv23 Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I'm not too sure about Microsoft getting their foot in the door,I think the reason this forum works so well is because of Pauls dedication and our appreciaton of his efforts. I think a lot of people like this site because it feels like their site, therefore take care of it and it will take care of you.Its the sort of place you dont just tell anyone to go,it sounds a bit of an exclusive statement but it keeps that "cult" feel to it.If every Joe and his dog new about it it would turn into the sort of site that encece described. An oak doesn't grow to maturity in a year,it builds slowly until it becomes a force to be reckoned with...... oohhhhh I'm getting a bit deep and teary eyed now, mines a pint!!!!
Guest squall Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 would be nice to get the manufacturers and network providers involved as they could answer questions regarding new releases etc. Microsoft already do this in a way through Neil Innes on the newsgroup, so dont know if they would be happy to do it on an external web site...
Guest drblow Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Well, yes indeed. However, the whole Mr. Orange saga & official Orange involvement in this forum doesn't seem to have gone very well. Mr. Orange has not been heard of (as far as I'm aware) since before Xmas - suspiciously coinciding with the massive number of complaints about the e200 - so I am a little suspicious of the networks being involved. It's a great shame I think, coz Orange had a golden opportunity to become the "friends" of the smartphone market, by using Modaco as a resource. But, unfortunately, the "official" prescence here became a bit of a joke in the end, and more an exercise in avoidiung issues than tackling them. In the end, I saw no benefit at all from Mr. Orange being part of the forum - there was no great upturn in the amount of communication between users & the network provider, and I think the whole thing had a more negative effect on peoples perception of Orange. Maybe it was a bit too much responsibility for one person to take on, maybe Orange tied Mr. Orange's answers so strictly that it became impossible for him to respond effectively to questions ... whatever the real truth of the situation, it all seemed to go a bit pear shaped over the 1.6 update release. & it would now appear that either Mr. Orange has abandoned the forum altogether, or Orange have stopped him from responding to questions here. Which I can't emphasise enough as being a great shame. I think if handled with a bit more common sense & respect for the users of this forum, Orange could have easily changed market perception to being the overall kings of smartphone. I think it would be great to have direct contact with MS about smartphone - but I am a bit suspicious now about having network providers involved. There is too much politics with them to be completely honest. Orange are never going to come out in a public forum & admit that there are problems with their phones, which became the situation with Mr. Orange, where all we seemed to get was sound bites from marketing material in response to people with real issues about their phones, which I think a lot of people began to find quite offensive.
Guest ferret Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 As I suggested in chat the other day ... Sod it! Just release our (or Pauls  ) own smartphone!
Guest kelv23 Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 theres an idea,a modaco smartphone. That would be the equivalent of the masons handshake if you spotted someone else with one....then maybe get listed on the FTSE and start selling shares, global domination anyone??
Guest mcwarre Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 global domination anyone?? Mwuaahaaaa!!!! Imagine P as Bill Gates / Austin Powers mixed...... Who would be his No.2 or mini-me? God, I could make a sarcastic comment there, P!
Guest Coucou Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Back to the awards Idea, wouldn't it be cool to have a Modaco Awards thingy? You could have categories like Most Helpful Moderator, Best Skin Designer, Best Freeware Programmer, Most Pointless Topic Creator, Person Who Made the Longest Award Title in the Entire History of All Award Ceremonies Ever Since Time Began etc. Could be quite good fun :)
Guest kelv23 Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 we could do awards like the Raspberrys too, most useless phone, worst customer service, ugliest phone, most pointless app.the possibilities are endless.....well nearly
Guest Coucou Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Worst customer service is a bit unfair, at least until all the carriers offer smartphones, in the UK Orange would be worst and best! :)
Guest drblow Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 & as I have suggested before, 'biggest whinger on the forum' award - I am ready to accept it!! :)
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Dr Blow, I awarded you that 3 months ago lol !?!?!
