Guide_KenM : Please feel free to begin posting your questions in the room below. Please begin your questions with a Q: this will help us quickly identify the questions.

Guide_KenM : We will make an effort to answer as many questions as he can. There may be times when a question may be asked that we do not have an immediate answer for or cannot get to.

Guide_KenM : To properly display URLs and allow private whispers from hosts and other guests, please take a moment to click on Chat Options located in the left column and uncheck “Do not display messages with URLs” and check "allow whispers".

Guide_KenM : I'll now have the hosts introduce themselves.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Ed Hansberry, MVP and editor at Pocket PC Thoughts

Jeff_MS : Hi everyone, thanks for coming. I'm Jeff McKean, retail marketing manager in mobile devices; I work with retailers, device makers and software and accessory makers.

Guide_KenM : And I'm Ken McGrath, TechNet/MSN Web and Communities Producer.

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD]: Steven Hughes, MVP and editor at Boston Pocket PC

Jeff_MS : Q: Will there be SPOT support in the next generation Pockst PC's and mobile devices?!?

Jeff_MS : We're not sure about that yet. It sounds pretty cool though.

Jeff_MS : : Q: When will there be WPA support in Windows Mobile? Our WLAN has been switched to WPA and I am no longer able to use it with my Pocket PC.

Jeff_MS : I know this is being worked on. Sorry about your current troubles.

Jeff_MS : Q: Will MS support EDGE in the OS, or is that up to the OEM's?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: What can we expect of a next Mobile OS?

Jeff_MS : A: that's primarily up to the OEM's but no reason it won't

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: At the Professional Developer’s Conference in October, Microsoft announced a broad range of future investments on the Windows Mobile development platform, including new screen orientations.  I have no additional news to share today related to that anno

Jeff_MS : Q: I'd like to see WI-MAX support in the next PPC OS

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: announcement but we’re looking forward to delivering capabilities that will allow customers to enjoy high-resolution VGA screens, landscape capabilities that will allow customers to enjoy high-resolution VGA screens, landscape capabilities and more

Jeff_MS : A: Oh boy me too. Even more would like to see WiMax services available.

Jeff_MS : Q: When is the new Pocket PC OS going to be Available, and what can we expect to see changed e.g. Landscape support (without a reset)

Jeff_MS : A: can't give you an exact date but we're working on it.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: I have an iPAQ 3765 fitted with a Linksys WCF12 (wireless 802.11b) card and, an SMC wireless router and a Linksys cable router acting as my DHCP server.  However, my iPAQ will not obtain a valid IP address from the Linksys router.  What's wrong?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: I suggest you get sometthing like vxUtil that will allow you to ping and to a release/renew with the router.

Jeff_MS : Q: It would be great if Flash for PPC was integrated, as this could really help UI, any plans on this?

Jeff_MS : A: no plans that I'm aware of, sorry.

Jeff_MS : Q: What are your favorite devices?

Jeff_MS : A: Right now, my current carry-alongs are: XDA2, E200, MPx200 and HP4350

Jeff_MS : A: and a 4150 when my boss stops borrowing it.

Jeff_MS : Q: Are there any plans to release .NET CF Service Packs as XIP in future ?

Jeff_MS : A: that's a good question but probably outside the scope of us poor retail / consumer types here today.

Guide_KenM : Hi, would everyone mind holding additional questions a few minutes to allow the hosts a chance to catch up a bit.

Jeff_MS : Q: When will thememaker be updated to support WinMobile 2003?

Jeff_MS : A: as you know, that was an unsupported (free) powertoy...you can still use it with 2003 but you have to manually copy the theme over to your device.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q:  Will I be able to upgrade my iPaq 1935 to the next WM OS even though it has 16MB of ROM?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Upgrades to particular devices are dependant on the OEM.

8jalex has left the conversation.

Jeff_MS : A: follow up to Ed's answer, remember that if an OEM decides to do an upgrade, they have to factor in stuff like support costs, likelihood of uptake, all kinds of stuff...that said, HP's done a great job of supporting

Jeff_MS : A: most of their devices with upgrades

Jeff_MS : Q: Do you know if HP is in the process of making another PPC based on the 2200 series?

Jeff_MS : Not sure about that yet.

Jeff_MS : Q: Why have MS Games signed a deal for developers to develop Microsoft games for Java/Brew mobiles? surely it would be in Microsofts best interests for the games to be available on Windows Mobile devices, thus increasing sales.

Jeff_MS : A: I agree but also think that we want everyone who can to be playing Microsoft games! =)

Jeff_MS : A: and they will be available on Smartphones as well.

Jeff_MS : Sarcastic Q: Halo for Windows Mobile...when?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: I have been having a few issues regarding synchronizing contacts from outlook 2002 and activesync. It seems that ActiveSync, by default, only synchronizes contacts in the 'contacts' folder of outlook. however, this person has a contact folder several..

Jeff_MS : A: I've begged for something like that.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: layers deep on their contacts..     and the PCS sinchronizer freezes a portion of the way through.   Windows 2000 Professional, Outlook 2002, IpAQ H5555

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: You can only sync the main Categories folder. Categories is really the way to go. See http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/vie...opic.php?t=8034 for more info

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Sorry - main CONTACTS folder.

Jeff_MS : Q: i really only had 1 question, is it going to be hard to sync ppc2002 to sbs2003?

Jeff_MS : A: you should be fine with that, you would just lack access to the Always-Up-To-Date feature.

Jeff_MS : Q: christ0pher, which device do you have?

Jeff_MS : Q: When will they release a patch that fixes the Sound Recorder/Reminder conflict in Pocket PC 2003?

Jeff_MS : A: CMH, I wish I had an answer for you but I will get it to the dev team.

Jeff_MS : Q: Request: Can you guys please look into the ability of having a static IP profile and a DynamicIP profile?  I currently use PocketLan for this, but really should be something in the OS, as Our company forces static for security.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Will the next OS be based on the CE4 core or will you wait and release on Macallan

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: It is based on 4.2, just as the current Pocket PC OS is.

Jeff_MS : A: I'll take it up with the enterprise guys, Vission.

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : : Q: Are there any plans to support OLED displays in future devices. Using OLEDs would open up alot of possibilities on device design and mobilty.

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : A: There are a few companies looking to manufacturing this like Sony

Jeff_MS : A: follow up to Steve's answer, no reason the OS won't support OLED, just up to an enterprising device maker

Jeff_MS : Q: how do you get programs like yahoo IM on your ppc 2002

Jeff_MS : A: on any available program, you'll usually install it from your PC while your device is connected via ActiveSync.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Are we ever going to see versions of Pocket Word and Excel that maintain the original formatting?  Right now, if you create a detailed Word file, most of the changes will be wiped out when you open it on the PPC.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: This is an often requested feature but I can't comment on future versions beyond what I've already stated.

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : A: there are a few third party programs that support Yahoo like a beta of Agile Messenger

Jeff_MS : Q: will there be any support for the microsoft agent and the Text to Speech agent over the web on consumer pocket PC devices?  Developing a website that utililizes, MS Agent, it will help the company lock their choice on MSAgent if pocketpc support exists

Jeff_MS : A: sounds cool, unaware if anyone is working on this

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Will future versions of WM2003 improve on the built in apps or will you only concentrate on the OS?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Pocket PC refers to the whole mobile device experience so while stability and speed in the core OS are looked at, so are all of hte built in apps. Each version has some form of improvement in the apps over the last version.

Part 2!

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Contacts, some fields are missing compared to the desktop-version of Outlook, the view-feature (sorting) is  limited to name and company, please include the missing fields like nickname, etc., and include more than 2  ways to sort the contacts

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: THis has been suggested and is under consideration. I agree - there are some fields I too would like to see added.

Jeff_MS : Q: is Microsoft gonna manufacture its own PDAs?

Jeff_MS : A: Nope.

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD]: Q: I have an iPAQ 3765 fitted with a Linksys WCF12 (wireless 802.11b) card and, an SMC wireless router and a Linksys cable router acting as my DHCP server.  However, my iPAQ will not obtain a valid IP address from the Linksys router.  What's wrong?

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : A:Have you tried turning WEP off. Some WEP keys of different Manuf. sometimes don't mesh. I would go through some checklist items ChrisH. has a great list of things to check at his site http://www.cewindows.net/

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Will landscape support be available as an update (patch) to WM 2003?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Multiple orientations have been announced for the next version. I doubt they will add that to older versions.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Beam, beaming is limited to 1 file at a time, please change this to beaming several files and folders...

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Yes, I too have requested this feature. For now though I zip files/folders up using Resco File Explorer and beam that.

Jeff_MS : Q: who will win - ppc or smartphone?

Jeff_MS : A: sorry, old question. Room for both. PPC for larger screen devices, SP for when you want a small device you can operate with one hand.

Jeff_MS : A: Smartphone ultimately will have more units sold, I think, but there will always be a PPC.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: I have a Dell Axim x3i with Windows Mobile 2003.  Whenever I try to shut down ActiveSync I get a warning message that the program is busy and not responding.  It "kills" the app. but doesn't seem to be doing it gracefully.  Any thoughts?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Why are you shutting down ActiveSync? You just close the window and let it rest in the system tray. What exactly are you trying to do?

Erikka : Q: Are there any extremely rugged PocketPC's available, I need one that can get wet? A: Yes, there are covers that go over your PPC and make it waterresistant…they were shown at CES but I do not remember the name…

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : A tterbox

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : A: TDS also manufacturers Rugged PPCs

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Will MS migrate the built-in PIM apps to one single one?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Not sure what you mean? It is core to the device and you have different views for different items. What would putting it in one app do for you?

Erikka : STeve is correct!  Otterbox is the waterresistant cover...

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : Q:what if someone tries to build a small harddrive into a PPC

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: whats the time frame for the next of..1 week, 1 month, 6 months, 1 year...

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Yes, in that range.

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : A:I think it would be a great thing, but battery life would be a factor some have used cf2 hard drives

Jeff_MS : Q: Why no MS Reader, PocketStreets, nor MSMoney on the Smartphone?

Jeff_MS : A: Choices...couldn't pack everything in but they're looking at Pocket Streets!

Erikka : Q: When can we expect the MSN client for PPC? A: do you mean an email client?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Thanks for the response. I am trying to shut down ActiveSync on the Axim, not the desktop.  It is always running on the desktop.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Don't shut it down there either. It is always running on the device too, but the UI may not be up. Just use the "smart minimize" feature.

Erikka : Q: When can we expect the MSN client for PPC?

Erikka : A: Most likely at the end of this calendar year…

Erikka : A: called Pocket MSN!

Jeff_MS : Q: Any chance of media player on the Smartphone being a port of the PPC version thus adding seek, playlists etc in future OS's?

Jeff_MS : A: There's improvements to both flavors of media player in the works and hopefully will include your requests.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Will OneNote ever be released for PPC?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Honestly I've heard rumors both ways and I too really want it.

Erikka : A:You can do it on a Palm via Chapura.

Erikka : A: no more palm love!

Erikka : A: I hate Palm - but in all honesty you get better Outlook synch (including multiple folders) and Office

Erikka : A: MS is investing in jumping over them w/improvements for Magneto

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : Q ome way to synchronize the Business Contact Manager folders to a PPC or SmartPhone?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q. Do Microsoft see the Smartphone as a Nokia beater or just as a business handset?

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : A: Currently the only way I have been to sync the 2 is by copying the information from the Business contacts to your Outlook contacts since it isn't currently supported, but I believe some integration between the 2 databases is in the works...

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: Microsoft is giving up ground to no one in the phone space. Look for lots of new hardware in the future

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Why does Pocket Inbox work so horribly?  Is it too much to ask for a decent POP3/IMAP email client?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: What specific issues are you having?

Jeff_MS : Q: Alarms, include the option to play wma/mp3-files...

Erikka : Q: Do you think MS will release the full suite of Office apps for the PPC as a regular retail software package (not built-in)?  As I said before I will gladly pay 100-200$ for something like that.

Erikka : A: Not in the near future, but MS is developing other MS apps and selling them separately, such as VC. I’d guess that the full Office suite is in the picture in the future

Jeff_MS : A: workin' on it, would be a cool feature, not sure when

Jeff_MS : Q: Is there any plans in the near future to update the current terminal server client on the pocket pc that support the new color standards and servers on alternate ports?

Jeff_MS : A: sorry Tim, a little out of scope for a consumer chat

Erikka : Q: Why are licescees so slow (if ever) to release ROM updates. I think the # of updates to WM2K3 is large for such a new OS and should be in ROM not RAM

Erikka : A: They are out there, but MS has to coordinate with a mess of partners (OEM, operator, etc) so it is a complicated supply chain/pricing question for the entire “ecosystem.”  We just successfully got Siemens to publish the 2003 update for PPC Phone Editio

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q:  Ed, the Inbox doesn't have any rules, nor will it delete mail from the POP3 server.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: There is a third party rule client. It does delete messages if you configure it to. Tools|Options|Empty Messages. Then in INbox select Tools|Empty Deleted Messages when connected.

8beersoft has joined the conversation.

Erikka : Q: Why does Pocket Inbox work so horribly?  Is it too much to ask for a decent POP3/IMAP email client?

Erikka : A: I am working on a service called My Windows Mobile (URL of the same name) that will enable people to set up and configure their POP3/IMAP4 email over-the-air!  It will be live next Wednesday, so check it out!

Jeff_MS : Q: thought it was a mobile device question/answer session

Jeff_MS : A: sorry, Tim, we are mobile device people but it's billed as a consumer chat so we have all the consumery-type people along here   Terminal services are a bit beyond what we have to offer today. My apologies.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Any release date for WM2004?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: No.

Erikka : Q: Is Microsoft planning to attach the low end mobile phone market with cheaper Smartphones?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q.  Is there a way to connect to the internet while using the Work connection without the need for a proxy under WM2003?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: No, unfortunately not.

Erikka : A: Yes, we are J.  See releases in the next few months!

Erikka : A: cheaper Windows Mobile Smartphones are being announced at the 3GSM Conference!

Jeff_MS : Q: Is there a SPOT card being developed for the PPC to add it's features to our handhelds?

Jeff_MS : A: not that I know of, I would very much doubt it. SPOT is essentially an embedded technology and I wouldn't perceive a huge market for that (look at those little card-based radios, for example.)

Erikka : Q: Do Microsoft envisage signing more UK operators?

Erikka : A: We’re working with operators and more distributors, as well

Jeff_MS : A: you and I would buy one but not sure about anyone else.

Erikka : A:  given that the MPx appears to have landscape, that might suggest it needs a new version of the software.

Erikka : A: MS Answer: Yup.

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: When will MS provide a standardized method for mobile unit use (including sync, security features and policy enforcement) in corporate environments?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: This is being reviewed. Microsoft is serious about devices in the enterprise as full syncability with Exchange 2003 shows. I can't speak to a timeline though on other enterprise features, especially in this consumer oriented chat.

Jeff_MS : Q: Spot + Smartphone - logical... Will it happen?

Erikka : Hey!  Spot is not as cool as Smartphone!

Erikka : There are going to be a mess of new Smartphone device announcements this year!

Jeff_MS : A: I think it's logical too but don't have an answer for you yet.

Erikka : A: mess and mass of new devices, with different HW features!

Jeff_MS : Q; Who is Erikka?

Jeff_MS : A: Kind of the new Beth.

Erikka : But fully morphed into an Asian.

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : Q: Can consumer electronics such as alarm clocks or coffee machines take advantage of SPOT?

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : A: MS is looking at using SPOT in many devices liek magnets...nothing besides the watch has been announced yet...

Jeff_MS : Q: In Pocket Streets, how can I access maps that are stored on my storage card directly?

Jeff_MS : A: It should already, are you having troubles?

Erikka : Do you jokers have a Smartphone?!  What is all of this talk about SPOT?!

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : Q: In Pocket Streets, how can I access maps that are stored on my storage card directly?

Steve_Hughes[MVP-MobD] : A: Also try placing them in My Documents folder

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : Q: Will their be any major design changes to the way WM2004 handles RAM. Like the difference between Win95 and XP?

EdH-MVP_MobDevices : A: WIndows Mobile already handles RAM much more like NT based OS's like XP.

Erikka : Q: i have a Question! How can i get my site on the Smartphone Enthusiats links page!!!

Erikka : A: Send an inquiry into [email protected] with stats on your site traffic, what you cover in terms of content, etc.

Jeff_MS : Q: Should I sell my 2210 and buy a Smart Phone?

Jeff_MS : A: you should keep it, buy a Smartphone and a another PPC as well.

Erikka : Q:  Will the next OS be BEAUTIFUL?

Erikka : A: Beauty means many different things to many different people…but yes, improvements in look, and the ability for you to customize.  Of course, you can get different 3rd party apps to customize your Homescreen, etc…which I’m sure that you know of.  On Han

Erikka : Can get these apps on Handango

Guide_KenM : Thanks for joining us today and thanks for the questions. It's time for us to go now.  You'll be able to find the transcript of this chat soon at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/chats/default.asp#transcripts>.  Please see the chats schedule for upcoming topics.
