Using Mobile in US with Bulk call cards

I am going to the US for 5 weeks. Due to being there for a long period I will probably be getting one of these calling cars that gives me X hundred minutes for $10/$20. I presume these are normally have a freephone access number?

If I take my Orange phone to the US is it possible to use these calling cards i.e. Are freephone numbers free when abroad or does it do something silly like route the call the to the UK and then back to the US and charge me for it.

Essentially looking for the cheapest way to make calls with my phone while in the US.

Cheapest way would be a prepay US SIM card as otherwise you'll get charged TONS for roaming on a foreign network. And even if you could call normally ORange charge for calls to calling card services even if they are freephone.

TMobile has PAYG. I dont believe ATT does. Dont bother with Cingular. Thay have PAYG as well but the use 850 only in many areas that wont work on the phone.

Looks like its just not worth using the mobile over there and i will just get a calling card to use from my apartment
