Guest kjk Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 MS Mobiles Servant is a freeware program that is a consumer of web services. What is "web service" ? It is a service available at some remote server in the Internet, that is accessible through HTTP protocol - the same as this one used in regular Internet browsers. Thanks to usage of the same protocol as Internet browsers, users don´t have to worry that some network port will be blocked, or that firewall will block the communication. However contrary to Internet browser, web service is not communicating with clients through displaying of home pages (consisting usually of HTML code), but is using XML - other format, that is more easily readable by software. So instead of loading big web pages, sometimes containing a lot of content that is of no interest to the users (banners, descriptions, navigation links, etc) a client program that communicates with the server hosting web service is transfering only minimal amount of data. It is particularly important for cell phones to transfer minimal amount of data because users, who use GPRS pay usually for the amount of transferred data. Currently supported web services are: Translation Web service 2: translation of texts (not just words) Map of USA - Photo and Topo - scalable Global Airport Weather - input identifier of an airport and get weather conditions there Today's Dilbert Comic Currency converter (over 100 countries) - latest currency rates are upated from the Internet, not hard coded into the program Stock market quotes List of new (latest additions) Smartphone software provided by Smartphone.net Translation Web service 1: translation of texts (not just words) [currently not active] product search by keyword and category in Amazon USA product search by ASIN in Amazon USA To install this program just run the setup program in your PC and it will be installed to your Smartphone over ActiveSync connection between your PC and Smartphone! To check if you have latest version go to Menu / About dialog and compare it with above version. If you don't like to use GPRS, then you can also connect your Smartphone to the Internet using ActiveSync and its built-in passthrough connection through your Internet connected PC. Please note: the latest version of this program can be downloaded exclusively from Smartphone.net !
