Macromedia Flash for Smartphone?

It looks as though we may finally be getting Macromedia Flash for Smartphones according to InfoSyncWorld....

Mobile version of popular web tool allows Flash to be viewed on handheld devices running Symbian - and soon Windows Mobile.

Web giant Macromedia have announced FlashCast, a new technology for mobile devices. FlashCast provides a way of displaying FlashLite content on Symbian OS handhelds, offering a delivery platform for media-rich information to consumers.

FlashLite is a small rendering engine for the popular Flash format designed for limited devices such as NTT DoCoMo's i-mode handsets. FlashLite is used by FlashCast to display up to eight information channels such as weather, stock and sport. These channels update themselves in real-time.

In an exclusive audience in Cannes with Juha Christensen, President of Macromedia, the company is aiming to market the FlashCast technology to operators and manufacturers as a way of increasing revenue, although they also plan to sell it to end users. As well as the Series 60 version demonstrated at 3GSM recently, a Windows Mobile version is also in the works.

Even though this does say Windows Mobile, and could be either PocketPC or Smartphone (or both), I can't see why they would only make it for PocketPC and leave out Smartphone.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Mr Juha Christensen recently joining Macromedia...

I can see why it wouldn't be available for smartphone. No touch screen or pointing device. That's fairly integral to how flash works, and would at least dictate that a totally different version was developed for smartphone, which I would say is unlikely.

By Windows Mobile macromedia means Pocket PC - it is available already for many years. It has NOTHING TO DO with MS Smartphone yet. Sorry, midnight, but the news you quote has nothint to do with MS Smartphone.

Macromedia says this about Flash Lite:

Macromedia Flash Lite is a new Macromedia Flash profile specifically developed for mobile phones. This profile is designed to require fewer device resources and to operate in most mass-market phones shipping this year. Beginning with the NTT DoCoMo 505i series mobile phones, every i-mode handset has the embedded Macromedia Flash profile available for use from within the browser, and the ability to have Flash based screen savers

Since Flash Lite is for phones, and full Flash is for PDAs, it makes sense that a version of Flash Lite would support MS Smartphone instead of Windows Mobile.

Completely off topic... but reminded of a quote "The light at the end of the tunnel could be that of an electric train rushing towards you" ! :-P
