TCL will begin shipping its first

Smartphone, called the OC01, in the early summer.

"TCL is very focused on the smart phone market and we are significantly ramping our production capacity as we strive toward our goal of establishing a dominant market position.  This makes our choice of strategic vendors critical," said Dr. Andy Zhang, deputy general manager of TCL's Smartphone division. "We are pleased with the close collaboration we shared with Microsoft, M-Systems and NeoMagic on the OC01 Windows Mobile-based Smartphone, as well as on the other Windows Mobile-based Smartphone projects that we are developing," concluded Zhang.

TCL's OCO1 provides a rich user experience with multimedia features

including a camera, video record and playback capability, an MP3 player, and a 3D gaming platform.

The MiMagic family is NeoMagic's line of Applications Processors for

multimedia-rich handheld devices.  MiMagic products combine an ARM CPU, a variety of I/O functions, and a high level of multimedia hardware and software into single-chip solutions that provide the heart of low-power, high performance mobile phones and wireless PDAs.

even more info about this phones processor......

The MiMagic 5 Applications Processor provides:

High System Performance 220 MHz 32-bit ARM V4T Compliant RISC processor (ARM922T) with two independent 32-bit, DMA-backed, bus architecture providing separate interfaces for simultaneous access to system memory and program store eliminating shared bandwidth bottleneck. Split bus enables XIP feature optimizing system performance. Prioritized vectored interrupt reduces latency. Dynamically assignable DMA controller

Very Low System Power Consumption Low power 0.18 m 1.8 V process. SDRAM, Static Memory and LCD interfaces operate independently at 1.8 V or 3.3 V. 160 KB of internal buffer for display refresh without external memory access. Frequently used codes (e.g. MP3 Software decode) or data (e.g. MPEG-4 decoded intermediate data) can be stored in the SRAM buffer to minimize external memory fetches during program executions. Multiple power down modes including, run mode at programmable frequencies, idle and standby; partial LCD display support for mobile phone standby. Meets low power requirements of Smartphones and Pocket PCs. For Standby Mode, both CPU and system bus clocks are shut off with LCD display either on or off

Multimedia Enhancement Hardware-assist for MPEG4/H.263 video streaming and decoding. Supports CCIR 601-5. Digital camera interface, Hardware Color Space Conversion, Video Scaling, Video Overlay and Color keying. Video processing at significantly reduced CPU speed and less bus bandwidth loading saving power consumption

High throughput, Flexible, Parallel Inter-Processor Communications 16-bit Shared MailBox Interface and serial interfaces (Multiple UARTs and SPIs). A DMA-backed baseband processor can work as bus master and access the internal 160 KB SRAM buffer as a shared mailbox with minimum CPU intervention and minimum latency

Wireless connectivity Support for Bluetooth, IrDA and baseband through serial (UARTs, USB, SPI) interfaces. A parallel (shared mailbox) interface is also available for baseband processor

Low System Cost through Integration Supports low-cost NAND Flash. Rich set of peripherals including SD Card, SDIO, MultiMediaCard, USB Host and Function (including USB transceivers), serial I/O, and audio I/O, resulting in very small footprint

Multiple Boot Options Linear Flash, NAND Flash, UARTs, SD card, MultiMediaCard, Serial EPROM and unique capability to boot by another processor using Shared MailBox Interface. Useful in code development, production or for field software upgrades

thats right folks, 220mhz :)

www.MSMobileNews.comon 27/04/2004"]After reporting Midnight and Squall of MoDaCo's potential TCL clamshell Smartphone the rumours seem to be stirring again, this time with the announcement of 'the mobile phone handset joint venture between France's Alcatel and China's TCL Communication Technology Holdings Ltd' with the aim of becoming a top-five global player in the 'next few years', Alcatel managing director Philippe Germond said. Combine this with the information that 'at a conference call following the presentation, Germond said the new company will achieve sales growth through the introduction of Alcatel-branded, TCL-made clamshell and smartphone handsets, hitherto absent from the company's lineup'. Interesting to say the least! Of course its all rumours but if you remember the picture above then you might remember the speculation about a TCL Smartphone so who knows, perhaps it'll be branded Alcatel, either way we like such speculation!

Its speculation but lets hope that this all ties in and Alcatel create a Smartphone that is brought to Europe!

it would most probably be released in asia and europe at the same time.

I doubt that, i'd say it will definitely be released in China first, my only worry is it says 32 mb of memory, if thats shared that means 16mb ram/16mb rom (i'm guessing they may mean 32mb ram though)

China is really making it big now. I'm confident these are not rumors.

Hi.

I don't know if you have found more info on this phone but I managed to find it in a Chinese phoneshop today and I plan to go and by it tomorrow and it is cheap....about 2000-3000RMB:-)

It is called "TCL Genesee" if you don't know it.

If you want, I can take some pictures and tell you if it is good or bad. The design is not to nice but I think it is acceptable with all the specs.

By the way the screen is big and nice compared to the mpx220 and the camera is rotational.

My only problem right now is that it is with Chinese ROM which can has English too but when you change to English the camera menu is still in Chinese.....does anyone know if I can install another rom on it?? I don't know much about the roms and so. Do I need a specific ROM version to this phone?

Ohh and I checed the specs...the mem. is 32/32 so don't worry :o

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Unfortunately roms tend to be specific to the device and given the rarity of this (you seem to be the only one we know who's seen one!) the chances of finding another rom WITHOUT the Chinese Camera Client is unlikely...

Still good to hear another Smartphone is on the market, albeit in China!

I bought the phone today.

I look very nice and it seems to be very good quality. The buttons are very nice to use.

It havent got time to try any software on it yet. It takes a long time to download active sync (English/Danish version) from China. The cd that follows is to no use since it is in Chinese.

Do you want me to make a full review of the phone or are there just some specific info you want about the phone?

I hope there will be a European version of this phone so I can change the rom to Danish hehe.

By the way there is NO Bluetooth hardware but the software suports it.

Facts:

MS windosw mobile 2005 se

Version 4.21.1088(Build 14273.2.1.0)

Radio Version Revision:

1.85.3224

35.70mb storage, 24.60 available

20.20mb memory, 3.02 available

ROM update version:

Microsoft: 4.21.14273.0

Language: 4.21.14273.0

Does anyone know if these facts makes it possible to use fx. the rom for the mpx220 or other smartphones?
