SMS Not Sending Cross Carrier

I'm using the smartphone with T-Mobile service and for some reason I am unable to send or recieve SMS's from Verizon (could be other carriers also) SMS's work fine when sending or recieving from T-Mobile. Any Ideas? Note: All works fine on other phone.

As I do not know the US phone system very well I can only guess, but

could it be a compatability problem with network radio bands?
