Hi all. I got a S-VHS to RCA cable yesterday to hook up my laptop to my telly. Only problem is that it ouputs in black and white! Im thinkin it a PAL/NTSC thing as my telly doesnt support NTSC. Does anyone know how to change the TV out on the laptop to PAL?

You need to set the laptop resolution to 600x800 when outputting to a tv. What laptop is it?

Yeah it'll only go to 800x600. Its a Dell Latitude running an ATI Rage Mobility M1 video card, drivers are up to date.

You're probably trying to output to an RGB cinch connector on the telly, when the output from your laptop is luminance / chrominance (Y/V). Check your TV manual to see if it's capable of displaying a Y/V signal on the cinch inputs.

If it is, set the TV up to expect Y/V from your laptop or look for an alternative set of (Y/V) connectors. If it isn't -buy a new telly.

Probably not what you expected to hear - sorry!

Well i've tried it through my dvd and my tv. its still black an white, video image wont display but everything else will (video is just black) and i doubt the tv will support anything other than PAL (its big an old and i dont have the manual). is there not an inline converter i can get or some software to change the output of the tv out? im not really up on the technicalities of a/v equipment and a new telly isnt exactly within my budget at the moment. So you can see the desktop, but video playback in media player for example is black on the TV / visible on the laptop?

Try changing the display settings to make the TV-out your primary display

control panel > display properties > settings > advanced > displays > then select the TV "1" button (I think that's right for ATI). Apply and OK out. Or your machine might have a hot key combination to toggle between TVout or laptop display?

The loss of colour information is still down to the TV's RCA connectors being commonly used for the two incompatible signal standards. How about Maplin - they usually have a good selection of converters. Try testing the laptop on a friends telly first to make sure - look for a 'YUV' input, not an 'RGB'.

Hope this helps,

Have you not got a standard video input port on your tv? That's the easiest way. I know with my laptop, I had a yellow port and one on the tv, plugged in an aux video cable, and badda bing, badda boom.

Yeah got 3xScart and S-VHS. But TV doesnt like signal from Laptop (through Scart at least). Gonna get an S-VHS to S-VHS cable later see if that'll sort it. If not, time to throw the laptop at the wall

in the bios, are you sure you have tv out set as PAL not NTSC

The PAL/NTSC setting may be in the ATI settings (Control Panel>Display)

Your Graphics card can only support playing back DVD video on the main output (ie laptop screen, and not the secondry - which is why you only see the black box) ... The way round this I found was to set your secondry screen to be an extended desktop screen - ie both screens are primary to the controller - this setting is at the bottom of the first page in Display Settings - click on the TV in the top picture (Which will have a 2 in it) to select it, and then at the bottom selet "extend my desktop ..." you can also drag/drop the two screens in the picture to arrange them correctly.

You should be able to run the laptop screen at any resolution you normally do, and the TV at its 800x600 no problem ... depending on how up to date you are with your drivers, if you set your TV higher than this it will pan/scan to get the extra space, the same with your laptop screen if you set that to high.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for all your help but after all that it was just down to the cable! I took back the S-VHS to RCA (Laptop to DVD)and changed it for an S-VHS to S-VHS (Laptop to TV). This allowed the video card to detect the presence of the TV thus enableing the config options. By default it was set to NTSC even though every language option is set to UK. Why progs cant detect your country from the way your comp is set up is beyond me. Anyway, its all sorted. Position, format, colour saturation, everyting is perfect. Finally, fullscreen DivX and yet another excuse to use Dumdidum's Media Remote (as if one was needed). Cheers again guys.
