Guest cvdbl Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 Folks, Just got my HTC Voyager unit a few days ago and was experimenting with BT dialup from a PPC. Seeing previous reports, I was not very hopeful. However, it turns out I can dial over BT, even without having to manually enter the dial string as suggested in a different post. I assume this is due to the rev of the ROM of my smartphone. In case it helps, here is my setup and configuration data: Smartphone: HTC Voyager, branded by i-mate. Smartphone 2003, version 4.20.0 (build 13291) Radio 1.12.00 ROM: operator 1.9.15.1; manufacturer 1.9.15.0, MS 4.20.13291.0; language 1.9.15.0 PocketPC: ipaq 5455, WM 2002. Mobile operator: TMobile US Configuration: Paired the Voyager with the ipaq Created a dialup as so: Baud rate 57600. default settings for port settings Dial number: *99# Extra dial string: +CGDcont=1,,”internet2.voicestream.com” (internet2.voicestream.com is TMobile US’s APN) Connection - ensure the smartphone is not connected to GPRS (can’t tell you how many times I ran into this duh! Factor) - open bluetooth manager and select connect to “Smartphone: SSA” It seems that the dial up has to be consistently retried twice, but then it connects and I can access web pages, email, etc. Hope this helps. C.
Guest Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 Posted from my SmartPhone Hi C.,hi folks, this is most interesting to hear! My firmware version is 1.7.x and it is verifiably NOT possible with it to use the phone as a BT modem with it :-(( How come that nothing has been said here about an obviously commercial version 1.9.x fixing that awful BT bug? C., Paul and othes: Where can I get this version (shouldn't be under NDA as the 2.5.x beta, which is haunting the news)? Dear C., could you pls check, which languages you can switch to ? (Is German among them?) Anyway, I'd accept anything just to be able to use the Qtek8080 as a BT modem for my notebook and iPAQ5550! Pls help! Regards G.
Guest cvdbl Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 Hi, This ROM has the following languages: Danish, German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, portugese, Swedish for T9 and the following for UI: Dutch, Danish, spanish, italian, french, german, US & UK english. In terms of availability, remember, this being an imate rom, it is not customized to any operator.
Guest Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 Thanks for your fast reply ! But according to what I read here on Modaco all Voyager makes (Qtek 8080, SPV E-200, xphone O2, i-mate Smartphone 2) can be upgraded by the same firmware binaries. That would mean: If someone having an Orange phone (let us assume there is nothing like a lock preventing him from flashing the firmware) is trying to upgrade using a "generic" firmware binary (e.g. one from an i-mate Smartphone 2) this will work. The device will then be properly upgraded and usable and just software add-ons (like e.g. IAstyle software) are missing. Is this prsumption correct ? Can anyone confirm that the 4 different brands of one identical make can be safely upgraded by the firmware binary ? I guess this has often been asked and I am still not 100.0% sure if this works or not. Regards G P.S. Has anyone seen firmware binary 1.9.15 out in the wild ?
Guest cvdbl Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 Yes, you are right. You may just have to do the upgarde in bootloader mode to bypass some version check that might be made, other than that, you should be fine. I did this proceure on an old SPV when I moved from an Orange ROM to an imate ROM on that one. The trick is to find the ROM installer....
Guest Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 Hello C. thanks for your reply :-) If you mean the "large firmware binary" (~ 32 MB) by "ROM Installer" - yes, you are correct. Anyway this is a bit strange. The 1.9.15 is obviously out and approved (by Voicestream ?). I can understand that the 2.5.x binary is (still) kept under closure, because it is in beta test phase (though according to the reports it is much, much better than the 1.6.x and 1.7.x releases). One explanation why it might be all so hard to get these (generic) upgrade binaries (or ROM Installers) could be that you (a) can remove the operator branded UI from the phone [which an operator wouldn't like] and/or (:) you might be able to remove an operator (SIM) lock. Wherease the prior is likely to be so, I am not quite sure about the latter. (Aren't there any additional barriers to preserve the lock from being removed by a simple firmware flash ???) As for me: I live in Austria and as there is no Orange operator (and other operator), who bundles the Qtek 8080 I got it on my own. So I *JUST* want to have two *BIG* bugs be fixed: 1. the BT Bug (i.e. Qtek cannot be used as BT modem for notebooks and the iPAQ5550) and 2. the "High Battery Drain" bug (i.e. obviously in connection with a buggy SD driver). I'm neither a "Firmware junkie" nor am I willing to change my operator or remove any operator lock (which is not there btw). This is really teasing my nerves... I so much hope that either the 1.9.x or the 2.5.x firmware be released and available for public upgrade Regards G
Guest cvdbl Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 Actually the unit is not approved by Voicestream. They do not offer smartphones yet. Only AT&T offers the MPX200. In my case, I got this unbranded unit off ebay. I was thinking: places that may have this firmware (or a newer version of it) are www.clubimate.com or Arne Hess as he resells imate smartphones. BTW, after trying BT dialup a little more over the weekend, it is not super reliable: Sometimes the connection does not happen and the PPC and Voyager have to be soft-reseted. I am also impacted on the BT side by the fact that the pairing of my voyager with my BT200 headset does not survive a powercycle of either unit. Definitely less than impressed by the BT implementation in this unit!
