Guest afroahmed Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 Hi, i am interested in using normal headphones in my spv. And i have found a adapter that goes from 2.5mm to 3.5mm. but do i need a stereo one or a mono one? is spv sound mono or stereo? im not sure Click Here For the Mono Plug Click here to see the stereo plug thanks
Guest zeta101 Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 stereo, cant u tell when u listen to music?
Guest afroahmed Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 um....not really lol 1. so mono wont work? 2. how come the stereo adapter is bigger then mono one?
Guest zeta101 Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 im not sure what will happen if you use a mono adapter, it will either not work or it will come out as mono, best for someone else to confirm this. btw its very risky getting one of the above two adapters cos they are the ones that "stick out" really you need ones that are right angled, like here: http://www.ipaqrepair.co.uk/view_product.p...php?product=227 cos otherwise with something stick out of the phone it will most likely break the socket out of the phone if you catch it in your pocket or sometrhing. You can also try and make an adpater yourself (since the one above is quite expensive) if your handy with a soldering iron, salvage some old hands free kits etc...
Guest afroahmed Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 so i could just buy a 90 degree 2.55mm socket and a 3.55mm plug nd solder em?
Guest afroahmed Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 wat do u fink if i put thee together? will that work? 90 degree plug 3.5mm in do u think these will work?
Guest mike-oh Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 Could i suggest that if you can't tell whether the SPV is mono or stereo that you also won't notice the difference in quality by using an adaptor for a different set of headphones hence you'll be wasting your time and money!
Guest zeta101 Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 afro that should work no probs, just need some wires in between. might steal your idea, been looking for some componets to make one of these but couldnt find any. And i think you would notice the difference, if you went from stereo to mono you go "ohhhhhh, i hear the difference now" :)
Guest afroahmed Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 feel free to try it im ordering the parts tomorrow. The whole thing will cost me under a pound but ive seen it on websites bieng sold for anything up to a tenner!!!! maybe i should start a buisness!!
Guest moo_ski_doo Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 I don't know the first thing about electronics but isn't it possible you could short something out if you put that plug in to the socket on your phone? A standard plug for the phone should have 4 sections - 1 for power, 1 for left channel, 1 for right channel and 1 for microphone (I think.) The plug you've linked to only has 2 sections so this could cause a problem. Like I say, I'm no electronics expert, just something to think about...

This site sells cheaper at USD$5.65 http://www.pc-mobile.net/spv.htm If u use the one for the ipaq 19xx series, it's even cheaper at USD$3.25 http://www.pc-mobile.net/compaq.htm

Guest mrdanne Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 I builded one by my self, just bought a cheep hands free (£3.5) and a female 3.5mm contact (£1.0) and start cutting and soldering. The answer to your question is that then using only 3 "sections" plug the microphone will be connected to signal ground, and since the microphone is an input and you connect it to ground there is no risk of any damage. But using a 2 sections plug is not recommended, then you will short one of the stereo channels out, and that's not good. 8) I discoverd a thing on my Qtek when using my converter with grounded microphone it's using the built-in microphone instead :) I really recommends you "Koss The Plug" really good sound, low weight, comfortable and nice bas. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...246352?v=glance /Daniel (Master of Science in Electronics)2,5-3,3mm.JPG

Guest mrdanne Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004  Mine is just 120 cm (4 feet). There is two wires, right. If you split them they will be 8 feet :) . What smughead wrote that they are 8 feet on Amazon? /Daniel
Guest afroahmed Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 ok..... please check out the links above as i mentioned. i dunno if you have, but you say there are 4 in spv, power, stereo left, right, and microfone. all i need is left right sound so i think a 2 plug will work....right?
Guest afroahmed Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 HOW THE HELL CAN YOU TELL HOW MANY SECTIONS MY PLUG HAS?!!! WHAT ARE SECTIONS?
Guest mrdanne Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 Your original 2,5 mm handsfree has 4 connections (left on the picture), but your wanted 3,5 mm head phones has probably only 3 (middle on the picture). So you can use a 2,5 mm 3 connections plug (right in the picture) to make a converter, since you don't need the microphone it will be grounded. Btw, you need a common ground to the speakers, 2 speakers (stereo) will require 3 connections (left, right and ground). Does it make any sense? Regards /DanielConnectors.JPG
Guest mrdanne Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 One more thing, do NOT use a 2 conections plug (mono) (right in the picture). If you do you will connect the right channel directly to ground, and if unlucky this can damage the right channel amplifier.Stereo vs Mono.JPG
Guest afroahmed Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 thankyou. this makes it clearer. do u kno where i can find a 3 connectors 2.5mm plug then?
Guest mrdanne Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 Check in a local electronic store. I recommends you a 90 degrees plug, makes it much easier to have it in you pocket without crack it. I used a cheap handfree that I cut of and solder on a 3,5 female stereo connector on it instead (See picture in my earlier post on previous page). /Daniel
Guest afroahmed Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 ok will somewhere like whickes or b and Q have it? or homebase??? anywhere online? many thanks for your help btw
Guest moo_ski_doo Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 I very much doubt that Whickes (Wickes?), B & Q or Homebase will stock anything like this, they're DIY shops, not really electrical stores. Your best bet for a high street shop is, of course, Maplin. Given the amount of money it looks like you're gunna end up spending on this, and the fact that you don't seem too sure about what you actually need to do, I'd still advise just buying one - it'll be easier and safer. I can recommend this one, I know plenty of people, including myself, who have used it with no problems: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=105812
