Guest Kajjy Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 Hi guys, I'm in Thailand and I have experienced this weird problem - I can't make calls and receive calls from my Xphone - everything else will function perfectly. This happens very occasionally like twice a week or so, though it's really unpredictable. Somehow, the radio just doesn't function. I have to reset it. To quote another guy experiencing the same problem Here "When the problem occurs, the phone will try to dial up and after about 5 seconds, it'll produce 3 beeps indicating that the call has ended." I don't know what the problem is BUT the interesting thing is that I have spoken to O2 (Thailand), they've given me a buffer Xphone while they have a look at mine...and the exact same problem happends again on the buffer Xphone . This got me thinking that it may be the network settings or some factors other than the Xphone itself (in the physical sense) - may be some software stuff......I'm using DTAC in Thailand. Gosh I'm really fed up now....first it took me about 2 weeks to sort out the stupid SD card compatibility issue (I had a 256MB Kingston with the yellow lock tab that refused to work on the Xphone, now using a 256MB Apacer with a white lock tab that works perfectly.......tried a 256MB Apacer with a yellow lock tab before but that didn't work.....funny phone with some serious issues that O2 is unaware of.......)

Toshiba SD card also do not work with Xphone. I'm now using Scandisk. Works fine.
Guest mikeyboy Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 You sure the phone is not going into flight mode? I cant use Apacer 128MB but I find A-Data is OK. Sandisk is geenarlly accepted to work in all instances.
Guest samuel337 Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 What do you mean toshiba SD cards don't work? I have a 128mb toshiba SD card in my xphone and I'm not experiencing any problems - what exactly are the problems?
Guest Kajjy Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 The problem appears to be limited to 256MB SD cards that use Toshiba multi-cell driver. I have tried both the white tab and yellow tab 256MB SD from Apacer, as I mentioned before, as well as a yellow tab 256MB SD from Kingston. Both yellow tabs have the same symtoms - I can read data that are already on the SD from the Xphone without any problems. The problem comes when you try to delete or write anything on the card. I initially didn't notice this problem until 2-3 days after I purchased the SD because I was only reading data on the first few days. Attempts to modify data, such as taking a photo and storing it in the SD card, can results in your Xphone hanging and your SD card being corrupted. When this happens, you have to take the battery out of the phone as you cannot turn it off or Reset it and you have to format your SD card on a PC. I definitely don't have the phone on Flight Mode - when I experience signal loss, it just happens even if I'd been making calls just minutes before...sometimes I don't even know how long it's been since it happened. A very limited number of people have experienced this problem (Like Here) and to date, I'm still trying to isolate its cause.
Guest FRiC Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Hi Kajjy, nice to see you here. :) I'm now using an Orange SIM in my Xphone and have not had any signal loss or lockup problems yet. (See my other post.) But Orange doesn't seem to support data over GPRS. I believe the signal loss problem is related to the lockup problem, but I can't reproduce it. It never happens when I'm working in Bangkok (Petchburi Rd. / Pantip Plaza) but when I'm working out of Bangkok (Pathumthani / Rangsit) it seems to happen almost every day, and I had to check the phone every hour to make sure it's still in service. I have Apacer 256MB with the white tab (Sandisk OEM). I didn't even know there are compatiblity problems at the time I bought it, I just got the cheapest I could find.
Guest Kajjy Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Hey FRiC! Nice to see you here! Well, there goes the old saying, it's a small world, even if it's a virtual world! Yeah, I'm afraid I found out about the SD card problem the hard way - I'd actually bought the Kingston 256MB - didn't even know anything about the yellow/white tab thing....had to sell it at a loss and then bought the same thing as you - 256MB white-tabbed Apacer. It's a bit strange though because as far as I know, only the 256MB SD cards are affected; anything below with yellow tabs are fine. As for the signal loss - I'm still at a loss as to what to do. You've probably realized that it's a very difficult problem to nail down. I've actually taken my Xphone to the official Tech Support for O2 in Thailand to have a look at while it was under this loss signal condition. Wasn't very productive, however, as the guy just looked at it and suggested that it was most likely network issue. He did keep my phone for a week and tried it out using different SIM card......which was a bit pointless because when you reset, the phone will go back to the good state again. I was actually hoping that he would leave in the DTAC SIM for a whole week, then I'm pretty sure that the same issue would arise. The thing is that while they were looking a my phone, I had a buffer Xphone and experience the exact same signal loss twice during my 1-week with it. Now I've gotten a new SIM card from DTAC and am still monitoring for the signal loss - if it happens, then it's most definitely a network setting/compatibility issue.
Guest FRiC Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Yes, the SD compatibility issue is really strange. As most Pocket PC owners would know, they should avoid Sandisk cards and go for Toshiba cards, while the opposite is true for the Smartphone. I did more testing regarding my phone lockup problem and now I have a way to make it lockup without having to be near a large metal object. (I have a small metal object.) Will go to the shop that I got it from for some testing tomorrow, and give the O2 support place a visit. (Is this the same place where we can get a free battery?) I don't believe this is a problem with my unit since it doesn't lock up with the Orange SIM...
Guest Kajjy Posted March 13, 2004 Report Posted March 13, 2004 FRiC, officially, it's the same place but in actual fact, they will pass it on to another company to do it. Since you're gonna tell them about how to reproduce this Lock-Up issue, I think you'd best contact the Technician directly. I've dealt with him before so I've PM you his contact number and his name. Good Luck man - I hope that more and more people with this problem (signal loss) will realise that they have it, as it's a bit difficuilt to notice, so that we can finally nail it down.....
