GPRS availability

Hi,

I received my new SPV yesterday (from Mobileshop.com), and I set it all up and rang Orange to activate GPRS and MMS on my account. They said it was already activated, so I began to try using IE and MSN... but internet functions only work when attached to the cradle (and thus using my PCs connection).

I have noticed that the G in the middle of the status bar at the top has *never* appeared throughout using my phone, whereas the little G above the signal strength meter appears when trying to connect - however, after a long wait the phone reports back saying that it was "unable to place call".

Sending an MMS also fails completely, with the phone saying that it couldn't be sent and that it's put my message into the Drafts folder.

I have tried all the settings I have found on this board and haven't found anything that magically makes GPRS work :?

I will leave it until tomorrow afternoon to see if GPRS enables itself overnight, and if not, I'll ring Orange and see if there is anything they can do to help me. This evening, however, I had a thought - I live in rural Wales, which has a good signal for Orange voice and data calls, but would it be possible that GPRS isn't available in this area? If I find that this is the case, I might have to send the package back as it's a fairly important part of the phone :/

Any thoughts? :D

156 is your best bet. Until you get your sim updates and it's activated you're screwed.

For mine it took a full 24 hours from "activating" GPRS until I got the sim update tho. So if they have done it you might still just be waiting for the SMS. When you've got that you'll need to power off and back on before it comes live.

Until the G shows in the middle of the icon bar to say that GPRS is available there's no point playing with settings because they don't affect the G. After you have the G, if IE doesn't work then search for all the GPRS settings related posts on the board.

Works now :D I rang 156 and was told that, despite being told yesterday that GPRS and MMS was both activated on my account, in fact all that had been added was the £6/month deal, and that GPRS and MMS were not yet activated on my phone. Two SIM updates later and it all started working :(

The girl on the phone even told me that there is full GPRS coverage in my area, which was a relief :(
