MIDI tones on E100?

OK, so i copied a few choice MIDI tunes to the Windows folder with the standard fixed tones in.

Only 1 would play (and, i may add, it sounded awful) and the rest just gave me the warning bleep (the one you get when the phone fails to connect to a number).

So, i know MIDIs CAN work, but what quality do they have to be to do so and how do you convert them to such? I was thinking it might have something to do with the sound channels involved, but i'm not sure.

Basically: does anyone know what quality etc a MIDI has to be to be able to play?
