Charging using desktop cradle

I recently got hold of an E200 as a replacement for a faulty MPx200. Having looked at posts on this forum, I was suprised to find out that this phone would not charge with the desktop cradle unless both the USB cable and the power cable are connected to the cradle. The MPx200 would quite happily charge using just the USB cable when connected through the cradle. When I got the phone (E200) the instruction booklet told me the same thing.

However, I seem to be able to charge quite happily using the cradle while simply connected to my PCs USB port. The orange charging LED is lit and if I bring up the System Info screen is tells me that the phone is charging (I can even see the charging percentage going up). But, I don't have the power cable connected, only the USB cable. Am I mistaken here, or is it actually charging OK? (I guess by the fact that the screen says charging then it must be). Is the instruction booklet incorrect?

In addition, there is a 'Backup Battery' listed below the main battery on the system info screen. This is detailed as being 'Unknown'. Can anyone tell me what this refers to and what it's used for?

Thanks!

I also have a replacement for my MPX200, my E200 is charged from the cradle and USB lead only (PC on 24/7). In fact I have never got round to connecting the charger but have found somewhere on the forum that unless you connect to a powered USB hub the PC must be on for it to charge.

I have had no problems, but battery life is very poor even compared to the MPX200 but this is normal for this phone. A much discussed update is due and should improve battery life.

I am not sure about the ‘backup battery’ try searching the forum.

I think the backup battery is a throw back from keeping a power supply to CMOS chips or something, don't worry about it.
