Bluetooth: To pair, or not to pair

My friend and I have successfully paired our E200's - not a problem.

I had presumed that once this was done, we could switch from the power-hungry 'discoverable' mode to just the 'on' mode and each other's devices would only 'see' the other paired device. It seems to me, that whether or not you pair the two phones or not, the only way to transfer files/messages etc. is for the receiving E200 to be set to 'discoverable'.

Even when my mate's phone is then 'discovered', it doesn't recognise it as the same device I paired with.. I'm assuming this because it doesn't reflect the name I gave to it when I paird with it.

Does anyone know any more about this?
