MPx200 update from AT&T (truth behind the rumour)

There has been a little confusion lately regarding a supposed update of the MPx200 from AT&T.

Some users have posted with confirmation of new rom numbers, however AT&T claim they have no released an update.

I contacted AT&T, I cannot post the transcript, however here is the points they made:

1. AT&T have not released any updates to users - and have no plans to

2. Under there agreement with motorola, Motorola not AT&T are responsible for making/ releasing updates

3. Some users appear to have updated firmware - this is though to be because there devices had an updated rom when they were sent from motorola.

There appears to be a difference between how motorola do business and how HTC do business, in that HTC worked with network providers and microsoft to develop updates - will be interesting to see if motorola stick to this way of working as they increase the number of handsets the sell, and network providers they work with.

I read the post at the Modaco portal about the ATT update, but as I went to the ATT store the clerks just had a blank stare when I asked them about it. I even had them call for me , the response back was there is no update.

yeah - i posted that in the portal - it turned out some users had updated phones - but it was not a deliberate update by ATT.

Seems moto had updated some of the phones they then sent to ATT

Thanks for the info though, I am going to send in my phone to get replaced, my problems on the phone go away and come back in a large string of incidents.

so if i send back my phone for a replacement, there's a chance i might get one with the rom update?

a chance - but its by no means certian - looks like only a small percentage of moto mpx200's have been updated

It is true, I just bought my phone and have had it less than 30 days. I called a few stores in my area and talked the clerk into loading the phone and checking. Sure enough she had one. So I went and got it

If I do Settings/About here is what I see now.

Radio ver 1.10

24.89 MB total memory

Operator 1.1.20.81 (this repeats in Manufacture and Language)

My old version was something like 1.0.20.xx

I also have 1.1.20.81. My wife accidently washed my MPx200 and I had to send it back to Motorola. I didn't realized the ROM had been updated until I just checked.

I understand all that's been said but I do have a question. Even though ATT and Motorola say they do not have it or even know anything. Why is one of the wholesale suppiers now selling a MPX200 with Windows Mobile 2003 installed. They are in stock and last time I asked it was confirmed that the phone does have 2003 installed. You have to be a wholesaler to buy from this company but they are large in the USA with several warehouses in many states.

Look at the desc. from the listing -

One other note this new phone has the 900 gsm working alot of the phones sold in the US did not have the 900 GSM band installed and even after a rom flash the phone would not run the 900 where as this new phone comes with it full version up and running. Even though it is shown as a MPX 200 it is different because of the windows 2003 and the extra band.

it seems that that was the info given before the real specs were out. the mpx does not have an intel pxa proc, nor does it run wm2k3 (i wish it did though :D). of course, maybe a new version of the mpx200 is out that runs what it says.

So phone smarts,

You are saying that all those people that had their MPX200's flashed by Motorola with 2003 at the MDC conference had some different new MPX200.

Sean over at MPX200 bought his MPX200 the first days ATT put them on sale and his was flashed to the 2003 and worked just fine.

He's not saying that at all, he's refering to the specs in the previous post with the incorrect OS and processor listed.

Any MPX200 can be flashed to 2003 with the correct software

but this is not a standard OS that is available with the phone

to the general public.
