blue screen crach on PC shutdown?

Any techies here help me out??

I have a relatively new PC, and recently I've had a few instances of a blue screen crash on the shutdown procedure (something about non-paged area, and physical memory dump).

It only happens on shutdown, the rest of the time it works fine!?

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Presumably it's an XP machine?...

Start > control Panel > administrative tools > event viewer > system,

then have a look through the list for anything recent with an error, or anything mentioning memory dumps. double click on the log entry for a bit more detail.

you should find something along the lines of "stop error 0x000000D1".

Try searching the microsoft knowledgebase for the stop code, or post it here and i'll do it for you.

ps. if it does by some fluke happen to be 000000D1, it's something to do with usb devices which can be resolved by the XP service pack!

pps. love "the grid" skin, mate!

Cheers Stuart P!! Glad somebody liked that grid screen!

I've had a look through that event viewer & haven't found anything saying memory dump, or stop error ... the best I could find was a system error

Dr,

Phy. memory dumps will kill your PC - I was out of action for a month ! Had to reinstall XP and overwrote my Home edition with Pro - it nuked my harddrive and I lost everything ! I have since changed the following settings:

Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and make two changes:

Where it says "Write Debugging Information" change it to NONE (this will stop the crash dumps)

UNcheck Automatically Restart (this will keep the system from rebooting when it encounters an error).

Hopefully this helps you m8,

spacecowboy
