Guest A.Hughes Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 was just having a surf as you do and found this little nugget SMARTLocator - BETA 2 released - the first location based services application for Microsoft smartphones improved March 16, 2004 [MS Smartphone] A couple of months ago, as the first one, we were pre-announcing this program (see here and here for more information and screenshots). Now this program has been released in BETA 2 version. Please note: this program is the first in the world (and only) location based application for Microsoft Smartphone! The applications that use Microsoft´s MapPoint Locaton Server (MLS) are just trials that doesn´t work without purchasing extremely costly server software and subscriptions. This program on contrary is for the end users, not only for the enterprises! Latest version adds some interesting new features (the feature that we ourselves were requesting was "panning" that is now also, among others, available): Overview SMARTLocator is the world´s first Location Based Application for the Microsoft SmartPhone platform. It enables you to find out your location anywhere in the UK, providing detailed zoomable maps. You can also locate your ´Buddys´ too - as well as view ´My Nearest´ points of interest - all without the expense of a GPS! Features Ability to track your Friends and Colleagues Map Panning Caching of Retrieved Maps for offline use View saved maps Postcode lookup Find a local Hotel To get more information, or to download the BETA version click here. Please note: this program is for UK residents only. http://www.txt-u.com/smartlocator/Help/#Ma...of_SMARTLocator
Guest spacemonkey Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 has anyone else got this working? It seemed to install and run fine on my phone but it seems the confirmation to make my phone locatable is broken at the moment... Of course you can search by postcode... which makes it an OK little free map app... except for the obvious gprs charges
Guest A.Hughes Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 It says it only works on E200 at the moment, the gprs isnt as bad as you think, one map (the demo map) was only 43kb when i checked,,,,as its only a beta i think its quite good, i would use and buy when it has full launch, as i've had no problems thus far, i cant offer any feedback........... maybe orange might come up with a monthly gprs deal for unlimited use like broadband and other ISP providers,,,make sense, but i suppose its all about money with orange and not keeping customers and being number 1
Guest duncanstar Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 I downloaded and installed the locator no probs. Then registered myself and put myself as a buddy. I recieved a text asking permission for the search which i replied to, no probs.... But.... when i press "find me" it just comes back with 'you are not allow to locate that number'! Is it me being dum (?) or is it not workin at the mo??
Guest A.Hughes Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 You locate yourelf differently, you dont have to use buddy to find you, thats probably why you got a the message. Have you applied for your two free credits? if you dont get these credits then you only see that dover map, havnt had the no permissions message
Guest jaywalker Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 I've signed in, got my free credits and was able to view my postcode. However i got the same problem when trying to find `me` it says i not allowed to view that location. Sorry if this is being really dumb :) hehe
