SmartIrc.net - a simple but free SmartPhone 2003 IRC client

Hi, I just put out the first version of a very simple IRC client that I wrote for the SmartPhone 2003 using the .NET Compact Framework and C# (so sorry, it will not work on the SmartPhone 2002). It requires the OpenNETCF framework (I put a .cab for that on my site).

It is available from http://kny.iki.fi/smartirc/. Any comments are welcome, though I don't have that much time to fix things in the near future.

Known bugs:

When connecting to IRC, there should not be an active GPRS connection (SmartIrc.net does the dialing, but fails if the connection is already open).

Nickname can be only 9 characters (I assumed that this limitation existed in the current IRC servers, but it doesn't)

Installation:

Download and copy the OpenNETCF .cab to your phone and run it (using the file manager).

Download the IrcNet.exe file and put it in StorageWindowsStart Menu.

Sorry, no fancy installer or single .cab file yet, I have a problem with the CabWizard that I have not figured out.

Settings dialog:

Server: your.irc.server.name:6667 (don't forget the port)

Nick: yournick

Name: Your Real Name

User: anythinggoes

Init: any raw IRC command (for example PRIVMSG mybot :invite)

I've tried this on my E200 over bluetooth. Seems to work great so far - I've only tried it for ten minutes.

I'll use it some more tonight and let you know how it goes.

Ran it up this morning... worked real nice.

Only thing I'd fix is the 9 character name limit.

Take a look here for a start: IRC Help

Then click the "Chat" link at the top of this page to get an idea of how it works.

The action command does not appear to work. eg. "/me ate all the pies." using slash me

Yeah, missing. It should be easy to add, so I might release a version with that tomorrow. The nickname limitation will also be fixed, and there is a way to connect directly to IRC without dialing if there is an active connection. I also might add quick texts if I have the time (should be easy enough).

Cool, other than that it's great. What would be nice would be different colours for your own posts as well as it saying your nick in front of it.

Did you establish a GPRS connection first?

Yep, it connects to the server ok, but that's it. As soon as I send anything it just comes back not enough parameters.

Downloaded this and got it installed without any problems, managed to connect to a sever fine, and join a channel, but whenever I try to sent some txt, I get a strange error message from the server saying something like “no text to send”

I can send PMs Fine, and read everything that is going on in the channel, it’s just when I want to send something to the main channel, it doesn’t seam to want to work.

I am getting the same problem :)

Excellent apart from that. Any chance of a fix ??

Also, a command so you can send files to ppl, like photos etc. - would that be a possible addition ??

Cheers

Chris
