Guest cseilern Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 I noticed that the SPV's charger has the same socket as that of a Nokia. Volts and amps sometimes differ, depending on whic Nokia charger you look at (!), but the socket itself is identical. Has anyone tried a Nokia charger on the SPV? are the polarities of the sockets the same on the SPV as on Nokia's? :?: Given the fact that there are NO SPV chargers avilable right now for the SPV (-Orange quotes 3 weeks), using a non SPV second charger would make life a lot easier (esp given the battery life) and allow you to have a charger at home and at work.
Guest madu Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 Great shout!! And you could use incar charger too, just remember to bring that little adapter... And don't loose it!!! Or you're F***D
Guest cseilern Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 Have you tried it? are the polarities the same? dont really want to fry my new toy (esp as it is grownig on me by the day!)
Guest madu Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 Soz. Forgot to say: Not tried it, whoever has please let us know... I guess it is same, coz if a Nokia fits it would not be FoolProof to do it like that - so they must have thought of it. And considering polarity it is usually same on this type of jacks: +inside -outside : this would be the case, coz + needs to be more protected than 'ground'
Guest Lojt Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 I tried it, and the plug doesn't match. It has a different size.
Guest cseilern Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 well the plugs _look_ identical and they fit perfectly, but i have not tried it "live" (-with nokia charger in the wall). did you do that?
Guest Lojt Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 hmm, i couldn't fit the nokia plug in my spv charger thingie...
Guest madu Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 well the plugs _look_ identical and they fit perfectly, but i have not tried it "live" (-with nokia charger in the wall). did you do that? And for which Nokia phone is that charger?? Does it have specs on the lable: Output voltage and something else.. [must do]
Guest cseilern Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 re: plug fit: i found that it did fit perfectly. however, the plastic stub before the metal connector tends to be a lot thicker on some Nokia chargers that on the SPV charger. it could be that it does not fit into the rather narrow hole in the sync cradle. i have tried both the cradle and the mini charger adapter that originally came with the spv and they both good physcally fit with two different nokia chargers. re: voltages, etc... AFAIK there are many many different nokia chargers, all with the same plug, all with different volts/amps, and all seem to work with every Nokia phone I have ever had. There must be some intelligent power management/protection within Nokia phones... My current Nokia charger at work puts out 3.7v dc at 350ma (or 0.35A), with negative inside and positive outside.
Guest sparks1061 Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 Then you might not want to try it on your SPV, Take a look under the battery of your SPV and you will see the power requirments are, 5V DC with + on the pin and Neg on the sleeve
Guest grib Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 it fits in a old nokia 3210 charger , who wanne be the first to try if it's frying lol
Guest madu Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 I'll try! Now, I just need a nokia charger, and compare the specs... Though I don't have one!! So will nick one of somewone at work tomorrow
Guest Bhoppy Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 I have used my Old Nokia charger and left it charging over night and it seems OK. My SPV Charger was bugging me at night cause it makes a noise but the Nokia charger doesn't so used that and it hasn't fried my phone.
Guest spvdk Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 Tried it both ways. SPV charger on Nokia 8210: somewhat irregular, but at times it appears to be charging for a few minutes. Nokia charger on SPV: no go :D Nothing happens, except the charging led turning red, if you are lucky...
Guest timmillwood Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 it works ok for me not frying it??
Guest p_dog Posted December 24, 2002 Report Posted December 24, 2002 I used my nokia 6210 charger immediately (because the noise of the sop one would have driven me mad like my old ericsson t28. Anyway, it works fine, no problem at all that I can see after nearly a month. Haven't tried the car charger yet. I figure if it fries the phone i'll just forget to tell orange what i did
Guest Danlance Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 Ok folks... As people have said, thereare several different versions of nokia chargers kicking around... I suspect the people who have not managed to get their nokia charger to work are using a "standard" charger such as comes with 3xxx series of phones. (looks like a chunky cube) I know for a fact that this will not chargeup a nokia communicator (I had the charger at work - and the bosses communicator would not charge from it) Some phones (definately 7210, maybe 6210) came with a "fast" charger. (looks taller and thinner, and has a removable lead (plus a thinner wire that my dog chewed through ~ 3 times!!!)) I suspect this may work (mines under my desk at work until new year so i cant confirm)(edit: found a spare in an "assorted cables and connectors drawer! - see next post") If I load al exploer up, while the phone is connected to the nokia charger, and go file properties on the smartphone icon, the top line swaps (roughly every second) from "using internal power" to "using external power", and the Main battery satus remains on high - never switches to charging. This leads me to suspect that the phone is trying to use external power, butjust can't get enough current to satisfy its requirements, and so switches back to battery power... I suspect that it probably would charge up ok from a nokia car charger - as the available current will be way beyond what the smartphone needs.
Guest Danlance Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 Update Confirmed: Nokia Fast Charger does charge phone Nokia basic charger does not Specs: So it makes sense that the fast charger works ok, and the SPV charger doesnt. I would be very surprised if the 0.3V extra voltage would do the SPV any harm Whether the reduction in available current would make any difference, remains to be seen - I suspect that it might make the battery charge slightly less quickly but...who knows...
Guest Neiko69 Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 I've tried a nokia charger, both 3.7 and 5 volt type. The pins are different depending on which charger you use. you may have to be a little with the adaptor to get it to firt your phone. The 5v nokia charger works very well (same voltage, what do you expect). the 3.7v charger also word, although the screen doesn't register that the phone's acutally charging even though it is. both work fine. If readers of this had any sense they would plug the phone into the mains, fry the bastard and get they're money back. SPV's suck
