Guest AaronSoup Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 my 8mb sd card is only recognising 6.54mb of the size in smart explorer... any ideas...???
Guest Vector Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 some of it is used for formatting i think? :)
Guest AaronSoup Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 nearly 20% of it???!? It's an orange card that came with the phone.. surely if it says 8mb it should be exactly that... look at floppy disks they are 1.6mb but they are listed as 1.44mb because of formatting... surely SD should use the same system.?
Guest Pondrew Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 It's apparently because the companys market the cards as 8mb based on the fact they have 8000k storage. Problem is a mb is actually 1024k therefore 8000k is not really 8mb. The math still doesn't add up but that's what I heard anyway...
Guest Pulse Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 No, DavidRM is correct in saying that a part of it is used in formatting to a usable media. Like hard drives, my 20GB is 18.6GB
Guest Terrapin Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 Actually you'll find that the hard drive issue is due to manufacturers quoting total number of bytes. 20 Gig in manufacture speak = 20,000,000,000 bytes 1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes, 1 megabyte = 1024 kilobytes etc etc 20,000,000,000 bytes / 1024 = 19,531,250 kilobytes 19,531,250 kilobytes / 1024 = 19,073 megabytes 19,073 megabytes / 1024 = 18.6 gigabytes As you have just quoted. Though the numbers for an 8 megabyte SD card come out a little different to the expected 6.54 megabytes. 8,000,000 bytes / 1024 = 7,812.5 kilobytes 7,812.5 kilobytes / 1024 = 7.63 megabytes Therefore I'm assuming the file system on an 8mb SD card takes up 7.63 - 6.54 = 1.09 megabytes
