Guest stevem999 Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Hi there, this could open a massive thread but I have an elderly Handspring Visor and some 'fun' Nokias and I want to combine the basic sort of PDA functions in with my phone. I want it to be properly compatible with Outlook for use at work etc and I think this means it's narrowed down to SPV E200 or an MPX200. On the tariffs I'm looking at these both come free of charge. I know that the SPV is by far the better featured phone but I also read about a lot of bugs - what's the general consensus on the phones and what I want to use them for - I'm not into modding or anything so really the basic 'out of the box' functions. Cheers
Guest chucky.egg Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 The SPVs are nice, if you're lucky enough to get a good one (Orange's new advertising campaign is based on the Clint Eastwood films and the jingle is "Are you feeling lucky, punk?") I'd say go for the Moto, based on my own experiences.
Guest Disco Stu Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 I'd have said go for the E200 (it should be relatively bug-free out of the box now) but don't apply the upgrade.
Guest stevem999 Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Thanks! 50/50 so far - i've also spent a bit of time loking at P900 as well - think this may be way over the top for what I use it for and it lacks some simple phone stuff such as Profiles! (I think the SPV/MPX have these!!)
Guest reGen Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 i would say go for the e200 as well...mpx200 is missing some simple features that you would expect on any new phone...ie bluetooth. also, it runs on WM2002 compared to 2003 on the e200. i have the chance to change my e200 to an mpx200 but dont fancy it :) e200 does indeed have profiles
Guest stevem999 Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Right then, think I'm going to jump in with bioth feet and get an E200 - I'll avoid the ROM update at first (guess that they won't start shipping with this for a little while) and see how I go.
Guest shaund316 Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 my friend had the mpx200 and after 3 months it made a crunch noise when u opened the flip and it wouldn't turn on. I've had my e200 for 3 weeks and it seems pretty good, better than my nokia 3650 anyway. They told my friend with the mpx that he had to accept a nokia 6600 off them for their orange care or buy out his contract! I love nokias (the spv is my 1st non-nokia) but he HATES them and symbian! customer care eh, orange?
Guest Pagemakers Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 Thanks! 50/50 so far - i've also spent a bit of time loking at P900 as well - think this may be way over the top for what I use it for and it lacks some simple phone stuff such as Profiles! (I think the SPV/MPX have these!!) As a phone the E200 is better than the P900 in MY opinion. The P900 id too much of a 2 handed device. Too much going on with the stylus for my liking. The E200, although not perfect is definitely the best of the rest. It just lacks a decent battery. You might want to wait for the MPX100 though......I would.
Guest stevem999 Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 Thanks again to everyone. Pagemakers, I know what you mean about the MPx 100 (or even the 220) but does anyone have the slightest clue when they're coming out? Is the MPX100 going to do everything an E200 does now and isn't it likely to cost a shedload compared to E200 which is now basically free if you take any half-decent contract?
Guest MPxMike Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 Whatever you get, try not to get it from Orange. If it goes wrong and they have no stock they'll probably send you a StarTac to replace it
Guest stevem999 Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 MPxMike - thanks for the views - is there anywhere to get it other than Orange if you need a new contract to afford it! Didn't think it was offered anywhere else??
Guest DeFacto Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 I think he meant don't get it from the Orange Shop. The Link and some small phone dealers used to have deals on the e200, like a free keyboard or memory. Personally, I preferred getting it direct from Orange, as I didn't want to phone up the phone dealer with a problem only to get a reply saying "it's not our problem, contact orange". I got my phone 3 weeks ago, and haven't had any complaints yet. Well apart from the odd crash when installing too many apps :)
Guest stevem999 Posted April 2, 2004 Report Posted April 2, 2004 Thanks for the info - I'm tempted to get it from an independent or CPW - the online retailers offer much better deals and one of them is based a few miles from me so could actually get it online and get offline service! The other option is for CPW to price match - anyone know if they match the whole deal i.e. tariff, phone costs, accessory bundle etc or is it just the price of the phone? Tried the Link but the donut I spoke to didn't have a clue and had to scurry off to the Manager for an answer to every question. The E200 is in their March buyers guide but was never available - supposedly they'll be getting it again in April. Also wonder if anyone just buys old mobile phones/chargers/manuals rather than trading-in as not everyone does this? I have a Panasonic GD75, Nokia 6210 and Nokia 5100 all with manuals and chargers!
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 2, 2004 Report Posted April 2, 2004 themobilerepublic.com buy old phones, but they don't give you much for them. You can (I think) sell several phones at once, so you could find that it pays for a decent handset! Cool!
