Guest benpopple Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 After about 20 pointless calls to orange UK, i'm hoping someone on this forum can help me with my problem... My SPV was working great, I unlocked it without any problems. Then a couple of months ago I installed the update that was put on the Orange website last november (version 3.0 build 13258) Nice update, everything works faster etc. I could connect to the web with CSD or GPRS (I have free CSD calls at the moment so this is my preferred method). Then I unlocked the phone again, and I get the following error when I try to connect to any html or wml page via http or wsp: "Connection Error Error Unable to place call" Seems other people on this forum have has the same problem, but I couldn't see a solution posted... Phone: Original / Classic SPV Network: Orange UK Hope someone can help
Guest Disco Stu Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Hi Ben : welcome to the forum :) Have you tried re-entering your internet settings ? Orange can send you an SMS to do this automatically if you've lost the logon details. Another thing they won't have admitted is that the Orange mainframe has been down recently. We've had email difficulties due to this. It might be just a case of 'keep trying'
Guest benpopple Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Hi Stu, thanks for the welcome! I was sent the settings by Orange about 2 weeks ago, unfortunately it didn't help in the slightest. One thing I didn't mention is that the update has been installed for the last couple of months, it was unlocked at the time & that is when the connection problems started. I turned my phone on on Sunday morning & it had reset itself somehow, can't remember exactly what it said but the home screen & all settings were back to their default, and the phone was locked again. Is this like it did a hard reset (I haven't tried one before)? All my files (both on the phone & SD card) and contacts were intact. However - I could connect without (much) problem, say 3 or 4 times out of 5 (maybe this is due to the problem with the orange mainframe you mentioned). Both CSD & GPRS worked. I unlocked the phone again today, and I cannot connect to the web. Suggests to me it could be a problem with unlocking my phone? My connection settings: Orange CSD WAP Connects to: The Internet Country Code 44 Dialling code 7973 Phone Number 100500 User Name Orange Password Multimedia Domain Orange GPRS Connects to: The Internet Access Point: The Internet User name Password Primary DNS 0.0.0.0 Secondary DNS 0.0.0.0 Ip Address Hmm maybe I need to set DNS's? Is it worth me posting the WAP proxy settings? (Does IE use a proxy to connect?)

Sounds like your phone has done a Partial Reset. This could be the source of your problems and I would suggest you do a Hard Reset first. Remember when you do a Hard Reset you will have to re-install your apps etc and re-sync your contacts with Outlook.
Guest benpopple Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Thanks for the info, would I have to also install the Orange update again? Do you know the one i mean?
Guest Disco Stu Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 You mean the 1.6 ROM upgrade I believe. No, that shouldn't be affected, but you will have to app.unlock again.
Guest benpopple Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Ok I did a hard reset. GPRS connection now seems to work fine (though I haven't unlocked the phone again yet) CSD connection still isn't working - same problem as before ("unable to place call") After the hard reset I couldn't make voice calls. I "fixed" this by enabling "fixed dialling" under telephony settings, and then disabling it. Is this normal?! I don't even know what fixed dialling means, I just remember some orange operator asking me to check it one of the times i phoned them. Can anyone explain what this setting does? Settings for CSD wap look fine to me, anyone have any other ideas why it isn't working?
