How much harm has the "E200 situation" done?

I don't think I'm alone in feeling badly disappointed by the E200's general performance/reliability.

I've effectively become a Symbian (P900) user now, although I still have my E200 paper weight knocking around somewhere, and I know other people are considering similar moves.

I still like the idea, but if they just can't pull it off reliably then I'm not going to use a sub-standard device just to buy them time to get it right for the next phone (or the one after, or the one after that, or...)

My questions are these:

Is anybody out there listening? Or now they have our money are they just going to move on to the next SPV and leave us to our own devices (no pun intended)

And how is the situation affecting current and prosepective owners? Are people being put off the SPVs because of this?

... i am pretty close to your point of view. i only keep my e200 till motorola comes around the corner with the mpx220. if that fails too or brings the same experience like the e200 i'll definitly leave the plattform.

but we all discussed that already often with no result at all. so this leads nowhere just like the other threads/polls/shouts before.

cheers, lutz

As a fellow frustrated e200 owner (6 replacements and counting :x ), I have to say that there should be another option - "no, and I can't get another MS phone coz there aint no equivalent". Just to be completely specific about it. I'm not really ijnto symbian, and I would maybe have downgraded to an MPX200, but now thats not even an option, and I'm certainly not trading in my e200 for a n***a!

I totally understand the frustration leading to polls like this. I honestly believed the e200 would be the remedy to all the problems with SPV/e100, and I was so looking forward to getting mine. Needless to say it's been a major let down, and I have said numerous times on this froum how I simply cannot believe that HTC/Orange devices have any real future in the market at this rate - unless there are hundreds of thousands of smartphone users out there who will buy them & simply don't care about these problem phones!?

To answer your question, my opinion is that Orange/Mr. Orange may well still be reading the forums here, but to them, the opinions expressed don't count for anything. I believe they see us as perhaps a "small voice", but definately not anything to worry about. I mean, the whole Mr. Orange scenario basically proves that Orange doesn't regard the opinions of users of this forum - I really can't remember any actual benefit to the users coming directly as a result of Mr. Orange being here. His occassional posts were really just news items about forthcoming Orange products - which don't work and are 3 months late! As soon as the flak starts flying about us all being ripped off etc, he disappears!! The joke is Orange is a "COMMUNICATION" company! :) But their idea of communication on this forum has been one guy, who is clearly not allowed to say anything except "you WILL love Orange products, there IS no problem, go back to sleep Orange customer ..." . Now, thats not meant to be a personal attack on Mr. Orange himself (I'm sure you're a swell guy really! ), just his role on this forum - which as discussed only recently, WAS hailed as new dawn in communication between Orange & the forum. Which it aint!!

Thats all a really long winded way of saying - yes, I think Orange are listening, they just don't care. And no, I dont expect there will be a fix for any of the e200's problems post-update ... ever. As you say, they have our money ... by the time they would release an update even if they did work on one, they want us to be thinking about the new SP2003 2nd edition phones!! Then we'll see Mr. Orange make a suprise appearance to tell us all about the great new Orange products we can get, which will address all the bugs we've been so helpful in telling them about on this forum!!!!!!!!!

And yes, it has put me off HTC/Orange devices.

Totally agree with you m8 - but hey, it's good to rant!! I think inside, I'm always secretly hoping that there will be an Orange executive, sitting late night in the office, just browsing the web ... and suddenly stumbles on a smartphone forum, where the users seem friendly and intelligent, and yet somehow ... really pi**ed off at his beloved company! And he thinks to himself ... hang on a minute, these people are right!! I'm going to make a new smartphone ... a proper smartphone ... one that will do EVERYTHING!!

But, you know ... maybe I should just cut down on the drugs??!! :)

I doubt that all the problems will ever be fixed and I'm also waiting for the next Motos etc.

My assumption is that Orange / MS / HTC have so many other projects on the go that the SPV, on it's own, is not that important. Although current owners might be annoyed with the bugs they'll hopefully be getting it right in future releases. As is known, we're all beta-testers really and the turnover (is 'churn' the term I'm looking for here ?) of Smartphone models will always mean that existing models get less attention than the next generation.

We'll all laugh about this one day....

I quite agree with all comments made. I was made an offer of a free upgrade to a p900, but had to pay for the handset (which is currently out of stock and £299 ! - I said thanks but no thanks !

The contact I spoke with is a woman from the Executive's Office, who admitted she knew nothing of the E200 problems, but then she didn't work in customer services.

I suggested she searched her database for problems with the E200 !!

There is no other handset that even comes close to the E200, and Orange's definition of an 'Upgrade' - is one which is a newer handest (so she told me !!!!)

So I will be sticking with the E200 for now (at least it is a replacement for the 'screwed' ROM update. ie - the old ROM :)

I suggest that more people contact this office though, It seems issues are not getting through and getting lost in their dbase/helpdesk system

Contact details are [email protected]

He is the president of Technical, but I think his mail account is monitored by people in his office.REMEMBER - The more people complain, the higher the chance of them doing something about it - especially from this angle and not customer services !!

Come on People - dont sit on the Fence......GET SHOUTING (politely of course  )

...this poor guy will not be able to open outlook again i think.

i cant shout out that much - we dont even have orange here in germany, so i see even less chances to be heard compared to you as orange costumers...

cheers, lutz

Poor sod!

Still, this is the sort of thing that's worked for me in the past with Orange.

If anyone has a fax number for anyone useful in Orange a good trick I've used in the past is to write a letter (including your contact details), print it 3 times and feed it through your fax machine. Set it off, and once their fax system dies under the weight of it all they tend to get back to you.

Faxes are surprisingly cheap.

Good thought Chris :)

Im sure that with Orange care one is entitled to an equal or better handset. Maybe we should start charging orange for the loss of services on the handset. Think i might start invoicing them!

Will the E200 faults ever be fully resolved?
In my humble opinion, never. Acceptably improved - October

How much harm has the "E200 situation" done?

To the new smartphone user, not a lot. To the existing user, very, very much.

Just me ranting off again? Maybe, but let me qualify my opinions. You see, 18 months down the line, is the SPV user totally happy with the performance of their phone? Does it perform smoothly and sweetly as it should after two updates? Maybe, maybe not - but realistically Smartphone 2002 devices are never going to perform any better. Because there is a new kid on the block... Windows Mobile 2003

It could be fair to say that a year after the original SPV, the E200 at launch was found to be just as bug riddled as the first SPV was (if not more so). So all hands to the pumps to get a new update together to get Orange's new flagship running properly. Not so bad if you are a newbie to Smartphones as hey, maybe this is how they really are with Smartphones

But whereas each update for the SPV/E100 marginally improved performance, its fair to say that the new E200 ROM takes things backwards a step. Say one update to put things back the way they were, another update to actually improve the performance - maybe in October, your E200 will start to work better! If you are an experienced Smartphone user, you know that this isn't the way things are supposed to be and you get deservedly pissed off. :x

I wonder if anyone at HTC has watched that bit in Titanic where the boat is going down and the band is still playing? Look at all the wonderful toys Motorola have coming - who's seriously going to wait around for them to get their act together?

Well I was pleased enough with my SPV to want to upgrade to the e200 until middle of last week. What changed was I lost the use of my pc (that fire in manchester which destroyed 130000 phone lines killed my server and internet). When the phone went wrong I then realised how much i'm tied to getting solutions for problems and I'm thoroughly sick of it. I'm seriously considering upgrading to the treo now.
