Just wondered what everyone thought about this:

I have the original SPV (with latest ROM update) and am now eligible for a free upgrade to the E200. I won't be using the Bluetooth, and hardly the camera (sure it's more convenient to have the camera built-in, but the picture quality doesn't seem to be any great shakes).

So, given all the issues people have raised with the E200 (pre and post update), is it worth upgrading at all?

The SPV is fairly (!) stable, sound quality is fine, battery life okay, it's smaller than the E200, and (to my eye) better looking.

So, what's the advantage of the E200? Shall I just hang on and wait for (ever?) for one of the new Moto's, or even the Sagem?

I'm in the same boat. I've had the SPV (classic) since christmas 2002.

I've manage to not loose the camera attachment in that time and want a

bluetooth gadget to play with.

I really want the E200 (have a free grade waiting for me this thursday).

but I keep reading about sound problems and sd card reading troubles.

Will it be worth it for me? Out of the box is the E200 functions ok?

Out of the box I reckon you'll be fine.

There are little bugs but then there are with them all.

Yeah, I would probably recommend going ahead and getting the E200 now if you can do it without it costing a bomb. There are MANY improvements over the original SPV although I agree with you about the size and looks!

The screen alone is worth the upgrade, let alone Windows Mobile 2003 + .net

Having said that, if you'll be intending keeping the 'phone a while it might be best to wait til the MPX100 in the hope that it is all the E200 is but with battery life!

Guys,

Thanks for the responses so far.

I'm still not sure what to do - keep walking past my local Orange shop.

I guess I feel that the E200 has kind of had its chance (and kind of blew it). And better things are imminent (If only there was something more concrete about Moto/Sagem release dates..ho, hum).

Any more thoughts?

Thanks chaps.

I looked at the preview of the MPX100 sounds good but I'm a bit of a tart and don't like the styling :D

I think I'll jump and go for the E200....Looks like I'm getting a free upgrade but I can keep my "classic" SPV muhahhah!!!!

But bear in mind once you get that upgrade you'll be stuck with the 'phone for another year - and new MS smartphones are due out in the next couple of months. Could be very frustrating to wait until your contract expires; or very costly if you want to upgrade in between...

I actually run two contacts, the point being that I can get a new phone every six months without having to shell out too much. My monthly bills are quite large but I use the minutes/phones/texts to the max so I feel it's worthwhile.

I went for the free upgrade from the SPV to the E200. I must say I much prefer the E200 over the SPV: It is more comfortable in the hand, and easier to use with the joystick than the D-Pad. I also find its (slightly) sleeker shape means it fits in my pocket easier. When I upgraded, I was given the 7 day return option (which I've never had before on an upgrade), so if they're still offering that, it's worth getting one to see if you like it - you can always return it if you don't!

To clarify on the seven-days (which I was also offered and initially surprised at), it relates (if you make a purchase/upgrade by phone/online) to the Distance Selling Regulations 2000. They have to offer you a 'cooling-off' period of one week!

Now you may have upgraded on high-street, if so I really have no idea; but if you purchased using a distance method that is why!
