Guest urdone311 Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 Why is it that with PDA's and Smartphones the manufacturers are responsible for the updates? Im guessing its probably so the manufacturers can use/create random hardware to work with the phone. Shouldn't smartphones be like our computers- where it doesnt matter WHAT pc we buy, we can always get the OS updates from Microsoft. At least Microsoft's updates WORK. (::cough:: E200 ::cough::D
Guest squall Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 i think its due to network providers optimising the os, hence ms not having the final say in the rom updates. cant see it changing really

If i'm not mistaken they still do the same thing, and they have nothing to do with network providers. As far as optomizing the OS, wouldn't Microsoft have the most knowledge on how to do so since they created the platform to begin with?
Guest Will Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 on phones i can see that operators want to control the roms, but for pda's etc.... might be wrong but because the updates write to 'the rom' unlike on your pc. there are technical/more specific requirements per device, ie drivers/conflicts etc Will
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 6, 2004 Report Posted April 6, 2004 At least Microsoft's updates WORK. (::cough:: E200 ::cough::D You must be joking! How many patches do they release that fix gaping holes in the last patch, that was supposed to fix gaping holes in the original release. I would guess the update is produced by MS (or sub-contractors), modified by operators and then dumped on us.
