Hello,

the Fortuna GPSmart works great as a standalone GPS device and in connection with an iPAQ via Bluetooth.

Mapopolis for Smartphones (apparently) is a great GPS program.

Sadly I have to report that the combination Qtek8080 (new BT-enabled firmware) + GPSmart via BT doesn't work :..-(

Problem is that the Qtek (still) fails to bond with the GPSmart! The device is found, but upon verifying the BT password the defaulted 0000 is rejected (though it works perfectly with the iPAQ!).

Can anybody verify that the same applies to GPSmart + E200? Regards, G

Is there a bluetooth pin provided by the gps manufacturer or is it 0000?

I have a Copilot GPS and the pin is 0183. It bonded first time.

I can't even get Mapopolis to install on my SPV. It says "This file is not intended for this device". Any ideas?

@bloodangel:

Which SPV?

Really the first version (i.e. not 100 or 200)?

Doesn´t the Mapopolis page say their software just works on the OS 2003 ?

@mark:

I tried 0000, 0183, 1234, 6789, 9876, 1111,2222,3333,4444,5555,6666,7777,8888,9999.

None worked.

Fortuna says the PIN is 0000 and this does work with an iPAQ.

They also told me the bonding worked with a new Siemens handset (on Symbian OS though) and I have no reason not to believe this. So it`s most likely the (still) poor BT implementation (respectively thin profile selection) within the E200. Note: My phone is upgraded to the "BT enriched" new firmware.

G

btw:Fortuna also said they will try to check it with a Qtek8080, but at the moment they have none.

*Cough* www.mapopolis.com *cough* Lovely picture of a MPx200 which, at least last time I looked, runs 2002 OS.

I have mapopolis installed on my MPx200 and it runs no problems. Don't know why it won't work on SPV/SPV E-100.

Hi,

well I absolutely believe you that Mapopolis runs on your MPx200. I didn't say it doesn't run on my Qtek8080 (E200) !!!

All I said is that there is no communication possible between the GPSmart and the Qtek via BT.

So Mapoloilis is something like a nice routefinder but without connection to GPS for me (*sigh*).

As the MPx200 has no BT at all I'm asking myself how you you are connecting to your GPS device ?

Leaves it to a cable connection but you'd need a special cable (I cant't thing of such a cable for the combination Qtek8080 = special proprietory connector and the GPSmart = mini USB as there is none on the market. I would have to solder it myself. Am not too fond of that...)

But ok. Even if there were such a cable it wouldn't be of much sense for me.

I have an iPAQ which can perfectly connect via BT to the GPSmart.

So what ?

Well, whereas I am not always carrying my iPAQ with me, I DO always carry my Smartphone with me.

And I could use it wirelessly with the GPSmart - if it only worked :-((

Carrying a combination of Smartphone and GPS devices cabled together is nonsense in my eyes. I'd prefer in this case the (cabled) combination iPAQ + GPS device.

The ***MAJOR*** advantage of a mobile phone is its MOBILITY.

You completely destroy this mobility by cabling the phone to any device.

Is this understandable ?

Gerhard

Ok then, mcwarre, then it was just a misunderstanding, because in the beginning I asked if anyone could confirm my findings with the same configuration (i.e. BT bonding inability).

Have made myself a bit familiar with BT in more details recently.

Why are there so many problems with combinations of BT device interworking?

There are various reasons:

1. "Time-to-market" pressure

2. Too many profiles discussed, sometimes implemented before approval

3. Contrary to WLAN, BT has been concepted as some sort of "instant protocol" offering solutions for standard scenarios (-> profiles). Thus user settings are not really possible and the supported profiles have to cope with the reactions of other BT devices. Meaning that WLAN can be extensively configured, BT not. (Note: this is not necessarily a disadvantage, but deliberately done to meet the neads of the mass market.)

I believe that WLAN cannot be seen superior to BT. They can coexist as they address different focus groups and scenarios.

@bloodangel:

This is strange indeed !

Could it be that you d/l'ed a wrong version ?

Try to check if you really picked the following version:

http://64.208.105.215/MapopolisForSmartphone.CAB

If so, check if it has been copied (a) correctly to your Smartphone (I'd say it is all the same where to) *AND* (:D you started it right *there* (and NOT on your PC; this is not a CAB-file in PC format !!!).

For starting this file on your Smartphone either use the Resco Explorer or SmartExplorer or the explorer supplied with your Smartphone (in the accessories).

I described this in such details because I do not know if you are familiar with all that or not.

If also this fails I could only assume your E200 is application locked or certified (I have no experience with certificates as my phone is "open"). I think Mapopolis can only be installed on uncertified phones.

Check all that out and then tell me if you succeeded.

Regards

G
