Tale of a scratched screen!

you know how it goes. you keep your e200 in top condition for months and then .. bang ... a scratch on the screen. Now it could be me but even though it was a small scratch I could see it and I had to get rid.

So began my problems.

1) attacked screen with Braso (sounded good at the time). Lots of rubbing and it made the thing worse. Now had a screen worse than when it had a small scratch. Must have pressed on too hard ..... now had lots of scratches .. Arrgghhhh ;)

2)Atacked screen with silver cleaner, look don't ask me why I was desperate! This just made matters even more horrific!

3) Bought a CD repair kit to resurface screen. Watch these. Looked promising, set to work only to find this was way too abrasive and made matters worse. Better still I read the contents of the "so called" resurfacing fluid and guess what, distilled water :? But the process did add a nice frosted effect to my E200 screen!

4) Did I mention I tried tooth paste, probably not as this would be very embarassing! Well i did

Oh well after three stupid attempts to remove scratches, they all seemed ok at the time, I was left with a knackered screen on my E200  Lots of scratches, fog patches etc, but I must admit a rather sureal effect when looking at text .... anyway.

As all good "Think they know best" techies would do, i then decided to panic and do some reading up on the subject. A bit of digging around I found reference to a "miracle" product called Displex (I was hoping for a miracle at the time) It seemed to have generally positive reviews, some bad experiences, but what the hell I bought some.

It arrived today. needless to say I squirted the miracle substance on my screen and started polishing. Here are the steps I went through.

1) Spent 10 minutes masking screen

2) Polish 1, 5 minutes, made matters worse, but more consistent over the screen!

2) Polish 2, 5 minutes, center of screen became clear (looking good) but the rest remained frosted. probably looked worse around the edges than when I started.

3) Polish 3, 5 minutes, central clear area started to grow and the fogged borders where reducing ... by now my wrist was aching (no cheap jokes here please)

4,5,6) yup more 5 minute polishing sessions .. and all was clear. yup clear as a bell and restored to as close on new as I could have hoped.

So what the hell have I been rambling on for so long about. Well just another plug of Displex, it does what it says on the box and will restore your screen to its former glory, but it will take some effort. Also i suggest that the whole screen is polished regardless of how small the scratch being removed is to ensure you are not left with clear patches and borders on your screen.

oh, just an aside in all my frantic looking for solutions I managed to purchase a replacement front cover for my E200, with screen and keys, on ebay which should arrive in the next few days. I think I will be putting this away for a rainy day. Don't fancy all that polishing again :D

Here endeth the ramblings of a happy owner of a restored E200.

A tale fit for the feasting halls of Valhalla! Thankfully I haven't had any scatches due to my fantastic Krussell case, but it is always worth keeping in mind in case the next time I have to remove the battery I drop the my phone into a tub of braso (and considering I'm a brass player that isn't so far-fetched).

You could buy another case?

or maybe respray the one you got, do so at your own risk though :D

as it's paintwork around the screen isn't it?

hey i always used to use sticky back plastic, not so great for clamshell phones (my mpx200) but it saved the screen of my old sony j5e and my minidisc player, when it gets too knackered, take it off and put fresh on!
