e200 rom update + mini-sync cable

I've recently purchased a retractable mini-sync cable for my E200. This was only intended as an 'on the go' alternative to carrying around the usb cradle. However, after recently 'misplacing' my cradle I'm now stuck with doing all my data transfers across the mini-sync cable :?

I realise that these cable were designed for the 02 xda2 but after reading up on them it seems that they are perfectly suited to the e200.

All was well until I came to do the new rom update. I start the rom update program and then it just sits there until it flashes up a connection error. I just think seems a bit strange when the all the data transfers work fine.
