Guest lutzh Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 hi there, the summer is coming closer and that means alot of travel for vacation around europe. like me goingt to italy i know alot of people spending their hollidays out of the home country. wouldn't it be nice to collect the settings for gprs for the major holliday countries and also writing down some prepaid or contract options we have in that countries? i have already contacted a italian member of modaco to get me a prepaid card for italy where i will spend two weeks in may. it will be cheaper to use a vodafone italia prepaid card with a gprs option instead of using my vodafone germany card in italy. lets start saving right here! post your country specific gprs settings/tarrif options now. thanks! cheers, lutz
Guest tizio84 Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Hi all, so let's start: In Italy we usually use prepaid card, and so we don't have usually "inclusive" voice calls or data connections: we pay for use. For Gprs is a bit different, because of the high pay for use rates, carriers have launched some offers, both for prepaid and post paid users. Pay-for-use GPRS offers for ALL CARRIERS: - 0,6 eurocents / Kb for Web GPRS - 4 eurocents / Kb for Wap GPRS Flat or inclusive data offers: Vodafone - 20 € / 30 days for unlimited Web Gprs ( promotion, available for subscription until 24/4/2004). It's called Internet Gprs senza limiti and includes also UMTS data for 300 MBs!!! - 7 € / 30 days for unlimited Wap Gprs (until 24/4/2004), called "Wap Gprs senza limiti". - 7 € / 30 days for 2,34 Mbytes, then 0,3 eurocent/KB (IVA Inclusa). It's called "Promozione Internet Gprs PDA". - from 24/4 it seems (only rumors for now) there will be an inclusive offer for Web Gprs: 20 € for 500 Mbytes, that can be bought more than one time during a month or 30 € / month for 50 Mbytes / day, so 1500 Mbytes / month. Vodafone it's IMHO the best offer for now: unlimited GPRS or even 50 Mbytes is a lot, excellent coverage and good data transfer speed. These plans are available both for Prepaid and Postpaid users. Settings: APN Web: web.omnitel.it APN Wap: wap.omnitel.it Username/password: leave blank Primary DNS: 10.127.1.41 (can be left blank) Wind - 19 € / 30 days for unlimited Web Gprs and CSD GSM through 4888, it's not a promotion like Vodafone, but a real option, so can be subscripted for ever. It's called "Libero Mobile No Limits" It's very interesting, but the coverage is not good as Vodafone, though it's improving...and cheaper! Settings: APN Web: internet.wind Username/password: leave blank Primary DNS: 212.245.255.2 TIM Telecom Italia Mobile - 6 € / month including 3 MBs / month, then 0,6 eurocent / Kb. It's called "Web On 3" (I don't know if can be still subscripted) - 20 € / 30 days for 300 MBs, then exceeding data at 0,3 eurocent /Kb. It's called "Maxxi TIM Web Sempre" - 20 € / 30 days for unlimited traffic between 6 pm and 8 am and during weekends, including 20 MBs /month between 8 am and 6 pm, exceeding data is at 0,3 eurocent / Kb. It's called "Maxxi TIM Web TIME", can be subscripted until 31/8/2004 but a lot of times the date has been changed, like for Vodafone. Offers excellent coverage as Vodafone (TIM is the first Italian carrier), but it's less convenient, and, when I used GPRS with TIM a year ago, I was not satisfied by this offer, but now things may be different. Settings: APN Web: uni.tim.it Username: telephone number Password: you can create or change password simply sending a SMS to 49000 with text UNI followed by space and the NUMERIC password chosen, min 6 max 8 characters. Then call 49001 and digit the password with your phone following the recorded voice. -------------------------------------------- Prepaid SIM can be bought in Italy in carrier shops like "Vodafone One", "Mondowind" and "Il Telefonino", or on their websites, and you need a "Codice Fiscale" and an identity card or a passport. Vodafone: 20 € with 10 € of credit for a normal SIM, 30 € with 25 € for an only data and fax SIM. www.vodafone.it / www.190.it Wind: 10 € with 5 € of credit www.wind.it TIM: 40 € with 20 € of credit (64 K TimCard). www.tim.it If you have questions regarding all this, please contact me. I'll try to keep this updated! Ciao!!!
Guest siu99spj Posted April 20, 2004 Report Posted April 20, 2004 Wow  You really spent your time finding out all that didn't you? Just a shame there's no one website where you can find out all this info. I'm looking to do the same when I get my six month hiatus in Korea. Should be a lot cheaper though calls to the UK will still cost an absolute bomb. Guess I'll have to stick to the company's E-Mail system...
Guest Maverick Posted April 20, 2004 Report Posted April 20, 2004 Even better would be a system that sends out GPRS settings to the phone over the air(OTA). Most of the carriers cater only to the blasted Nokia bricks. Most of the time we end not having the settings right.
