Okay, maybe this problem is b/c i'm a bona fide newbie. How do i get to my private messages?! i clicked the link sent to my email, and it gives me a page "Not Authorised." Am I not authorized to view my own inbox or something i'm not aware of?

ahh, this is because Paul disabled Private messaging for people with 10 posts or less because of Spamming... :D

I understand that, but when, without warning, everyone with less than 10 post is restricted (and I have a message that I really need to get to waiting for me), it is hard to post something useful. As you can see, I joined this group over 6 months ago and never have I tried to spam anyone. I don't post often (actually, barely) and that's because when I post, I want it to be something useful, but to be restricted overnight called for me to post "rubbish".

well, While the 10 post requirement is slightly stressing, I can understand it's importance. Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Unfortunately some members have suffered from recent spam attacks so to protect our members this ruling had to be made :D

I'd suggest, rather than using the 10 post rule, you should restrict new members (example, less than 30 to 90days) from using Private Messages. As evidence above, it is easy for someone who wants to send spam to accumulate 10 post.

Just a suggestion.

Its even more easy for the mods to set the post count back to zero :D

I wouldn't favor the time based (30 day) guideline. It would prohibit immediate access to those who wished to use it. the current way simply forces the user to be more active when he starts up, becoming more accustomed to the site. A sort of forced Anti-Newbie crash course. I think that 10 is a bit much, though. Maybe lower the standard to 5?

interesting, didn't think my original post would spawn a new standard discussion...

I need to get posting, I have two private messages!!

What I don't understand is that I have read and replied to 4 private messages, then all the sudden today I'm "not authorised". I have no idea how many posts I've made.

Is this 10 post rule something that has been initiated in the last few days?

The rule was instated yesterday in reponse to a "419" email scam in the system.

Your post count shows in the panel on the left of your posts - looks like you need one more to get your PM privileges back :D

Sadly, it was action that had to be taken.

I may lower the number, maybe even 1 would work if these people are programatically sending these scam PMs...
