Guest Coucou Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 Or is it more relevant to say Shakespeare's birthday? :D Why have we got a foreign patron saint anyway? Wouldn't St. Cuthbert be more appropriate? He talked to otters. ;)
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 Had to take a diversion walking to work this morning. Keith Chegwin & sundry students re-enacting George & the dragon in Coventry station  You may have seen this on ITV
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 Ahh what the heck.... Another reason to celebrate today : this is my 1,000th post :D - 10 helping people with good advice - 276 giving people a bum steer - 714 pleading for advice after failing to properly install something simple  (sorry for misusing your thread Coucou  )
Guest nedge2k Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 And i've been here exactly a year today :D
Guest Ed Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 Maybe you should treat yourself to a new car then.
Guest nedge2k Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 Well Ed if you actually had any taste or knowledge with regard to cars you'd know that she's a rare classic and was bought for said fact. So bite my shiny metal ass
Guest Coucou Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 If it's really a classic, do you reckon it will be worth more than you paid for it in five years time?
Guest nedge2k Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 Oh god yeh...she'll be even rarer by then :D 18 yrs old and only done 77k!
Guest SystemicAnomaly Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 Does anyone actually go down the pub and celebrate st George's Day like we do St Patricks Day??? No! That'll be the Guinness then. I better find a proper English beer to sup on tonight (that rules out all lager then). I'll probably go for a nice Old Speckled Hen, can't beat it.
Guest Coucou Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 What I don't understand is the jealousy of the Irish, ok they celebrate their Saint's day and always have - but St Patrick was a real person who did great things for Ireland in converting it to Christianity practically single-handedly. St George was imposed as the patron saint of England by a monarchy who wanted to shift focus away from St Thomas A Beckett. He was hardly the people's choice, so why should we celebrate him? If he was real he certainly never came here. I'd rather celebrate my English identity by watching the FA Cup Final :D
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 Regardless of the roots it was still a nice excuse to drink Bomardier down at Weatherspoons on a sunny Friday afternoon :D I also wore my England-flag t-shirt on Saturday purely due to the fact it was the day after St. Georges Day...
