Guest Posted April 24, 2004 Report Posted April 24, 2004 Hello, having had Nokia phones for years before "migrating" to my Qtek8080 (actually the only reason why was that I wanted an "Internet phone" and I don´t want Symbian OS :D I am really missing utilities like Nokia Cellular Datasuite or Oxygensoftware Suite for the Smartphone products. ActiveSync is absolutely no alternative, but just - as the name says - a synchronization interface. Especially what Oxygensoftware offered to Nokia phones was phantastic and far superior to Nokia`s Datasuite. But at least you got *some* softwaresuite upon purchasing your phone... The Smartphones users so far obviously cannot enjoy usi such software :-(( Well, admittedly a Smartphone itself is very powerful and lets you edit much. However if it comes to larger operations like editing all contacts etc. editing that on a Smartphone without a normal keyboard is very time consuming. Does anyone know if some Datasuite for Smartphones is being programmed and we can expect it to be there soon ?

Does anyone know if some Datasuite for Smartphones is being programmed and we can expect it to be there soon ? Interesting comment... Because, as you can see from my Phonography history below, like you I have used Nokias for years, of almost every model or at least series, and this includes both non-Symbian and Symbian. And the curious common feature? I have never used Nokia PC Suite for ANYTHING - ALWAYS having to find third party software to replace it. Let me quantify or give some examples... PC Suite, image uploading to phone... Messy, one by one, or restricted batch process. Oh, but wait... It doesn't actually just copy the image, or graphic to the phone... it CONVERTS it first - even if it's ALREADY the way you want it. And this means that on even the HIGHEST jpeg quality setting, the images STILL get compressed down from what you had just spent ages working on in my case, and appeared grainy on the phone. Hence why so many people PURCHASED MobiMB to avoid this. Contrast that with ActiveSync, whereby it simply opens up a standard explorer type window, where you can simply drag and drop to the phone ANY sort of file you like almost, and it gets copied properly, just as it is. Which leads on to the next bit. Symbian based PC Suite versions. When using the Phone Explorer feature, for CERTAIN types of symbian noka, for example the N-Gage, you can browse to the sounds folder, to add new ringtones, but you CAN'T browse to the graphics folder, to easily upload images. Where is the sense in that? Instead you are dictated to that you must use the graphics conversion application (as slated just before). Another one for you, but this is probably more the phone than the software... When connected to Symbian nokias (and it only works with Symbian Nokias - even the fairly decent [i must admit] new 6230 Sries 40 Nokia that does have BT, Video, Email, etc without being a symbian phone - can't use this) that use the mRouter connection manager, can piggy back the PC's net connection for things like sending email, or running third party apps such as agile messenger, but NOT for web browsing, as the Nokia browser INSISTS on accessing a phone based CSD or GPRS connection for the browser to work. And you see that as being better than ActiveSync, which once connected will allow ANYTHING to share the PC's internet connection, transparently and easily. There are LOADS more things I could slate it for, but suffice to say, what really puts it into perspective, is that the majority of people that I know, never ever even dare use it, and are forced to purchase third party applications like the very Oxygen Suite you mention, or MobiMB - that really says it all. The thing about ActiveSync is indeed its very simplicity. It doesn't have all these fancy 'sub-applications' for the simple reason it doesn't need them - tho the settings manager is ok with it. Why need a graphics conversion wizard, when you can simply drag and drop any file straight to where you want - be it a video, a theme, a song, whatever. BUT - I WILL be completely honest, and show I know what I am talking about and have good knowledge of the compared products by agreeing one thing with you where I MUCH prefer PC Suite... When syncronising with Outlook for contacts etc, PC Suite will happily let you specify the contacts and calendar folders you wish to sync with. This is great because you can leave your usual computer's Email contacts as it were, as the normal folder, and create a new sub folder for phone based contacts, and have it only sync with that. With Active sync, surprisingly M.S.'s own product, you have no control - it is the defauls folders every time - which drives me mad, and means that for my Email address book, which is the normal folder, I have to create a sub-folder for these, move all the items into it, place all my phone contacts into the default Outlook folder, so that it syncs with that, and then go through the fairly intricate rigmarole of having to then set up Outlook to use this new sub-folder as the default Email address book on the PC. Faffy to say the least. But sadly however, that goal for PC Suite still means that ActiveSync wins the match something like 10-1 or 10-2 anyway. Sorry. Meant to be a friendly post mate too - so i hope I come acroos that way.
Guest Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 @shadamehr Thanks for your profound reply. I had various series and makes of Nokias, not so many as you, however. Ack, the Cellular Datasuite was a brat of a program, sometimes screwed up my notebook PC and had it terribly crash (and often took me hours to de-install and bring Windows to life again). And a megabyte monster. But at least a program that came with the product. ActiveSync fulfills many standard functionalities. What about your contacts? The collection of Contacts is perhaps the most important (and valuable !) asset on my phone. Not Necessarily identical with my PC Outlook contacts btw !! And the contacts format of Smartphones gives you a lot more (phone-related) entries than PC Outlook. How could I edit them on my PC ? (Impossible at the moment as I think.) Maybe we just need some few applets to extend ActiveSync and not a large standalone suite. But DEFINITELY the community needs at least SOMETHING as an extension. Heard that something is to come soon under the name of Jeyo Mobile Companion. The beta, which was available until a while ago seemed to be quite valuable. No "optical beauty" though, but practical. We will see. Regards Gerhard
