Guest tsnet Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 Hey guys, I posted something similar at the Microsoft newsgroups and looks like they think I am crazy. The issue is simple: I am simply trying to use my Mio 8380 to surf/MSN/whatever but NOT using GPRS. That I got working. What I want is to create a dial-up connection to my ISP (Earthlink) using a local number (613-2314838 - Ottawa). So I created the connection with all the right stuff (by the way I removed ANY other dial-up entry). On the connections I set it to use the Earthlink Ottawa connection I created. No matter what I try the phone NEVER dials anything out. I know that because as a test I put my own home number as the ISP phone number so the phone should call my home number if this was working. No luck at all. If I manually dial the ISP I can hear the modem answering just fine. So the issue is the Mio 8380 for some unknown reason is NOT dialing anything, not working at all if set to use dial-up. Apparently this works just fine on the SPV phones (100, 200 etc) but no one can confirm this on the Mio 8380. Any Mio 8380 owners around that could confirm if this works or not on their phones? I see no reason why it would not work but I cannot make this work. And I am far from a regular newbie. I had this phone for MONTHS and know it pretty well (the same for the platform) and I am starting to think it is a Mio issue. Can anyone confirm if this works or not on the 8380? Thanks!
Guest martin Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 Hi tsnet I think the problem is that you need to dial using the Phone number part only (not country code and Dialling code). You can change this using the registry :D Instructions here - look for screen captures http://www.ppcw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=889 Good luck

You can change this using the registry :D Instructions here - look for screen captures http://www.ppcw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=889 Good luck I tried that, following all instructions step-by-step. No luck. Nothing happens at all. Internet Explorer is set with 'Automatically Detect Settings' UNCHECKED, Select Network: 'The Internet'. On the Settings, Data Connections, for both Internet connections/Work connection I have ' Earthlink Ottawa'. If I go to the Dial-up entries I can see Earthlink Ottawa. Connects to ' The Internet', country code 0, area code blank, phone number any number you want. It NEVER dials out. Any ideas???
Guest martin Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 I'm not sure why that's working. After creating the new location (All G's) and attaching it to the current location in the registry it should dial on the phone number only. You shoud have a dial up connection. Description: Earthlink Ottawa Connects to: The Internet Country code: (not used) Dialling code: (not used) Phone number: 6132314838 Username: (ISP username) Password: (ISP password) * The phone number should be exactly the numbers you dial on the keypad to hear the modem. In data connections Internet connection : Earthlink Ottawa Internet Explorer: Untick auto detect settings and 'Select network: The Internet'. Do you get the 2 arrows next to the signal bars when dialling out ?

If I manually dial I can hear the modem answering. I tried using my desk number as the dial-up one to see if it dials and it never calls me on my desk so the phone is doing nothing. This is really driving me nuts. If we had some sort of log or debug mode I could at least try to find where the problem is. But the way it is now, I have no clue why this does not work. And no one with a Mio 8380 confirms if this works or not. :D
Guest martin Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 What network are you with ? Have you confirmed that you can access the GSM data services ? When you dial via the phone keypad the network assumes a voice call while the dialup connection assumes a data call. Can you try other ISP dialup numbers to confirm that none of them work. You don't have to be subscribed to attempt a dialup - it should fail at your username and password. If other ISP dialups attempts fail then I would speak to your network provider and make sure that GSM data calls are allowed on your subscrition.
