Error 734 with Activesync 3.7.1

I have this rather annoying recurring problem with my SPV and Activesync. Every now and then when I remove the phone from the docking cradle I lose my ADSL connection and get the following error:

"Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated"

The only solution I can find to the problem is to completely reboot the machine and then start again which can get quite annoying when it happens every few hours.

I looked it up on the M$ knowledge base which suggested certain DUN configuration settings but according to this my system is already configured correctly.

I never had any problems with ActiveSync 3.7 so I am considering rolling it back (if possible) so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

My system:

Windows XP Pro SP1 fully patched

ActiveSync 3.7.1

Alcatel Speetouch USB ADSL Modem (Driver: 161.5.0.1801)

not a problem ive seen before

you could try disconnecting active sync before removing the phone.

To do that goto file - connection settings - and uncheck allow usb connection. accept this then the phone will disconnect from the pc.

Little annoying if you have to do this every time, you sure its not just a coincidence?

Almost sounds like it is powering off your ADSL modem when you disconnect the phone.

Does this actually "switch off" your Alcatel "frog" when the problem occurs?

Does sound like an issue with Activesync though... rolling back might just be the best solution.

Activesync actually makes a PPP connection to the device - so it would be worth doing that i think.

I am pretty sure it's not a coincidence, it happens roughly every seventh time I remove the phone and does so exactly when I do so (such that in coincides with the musical trill that ActiveSync makes when you disconnect).

I think you might be right, I have since discovered a workaround whereby if I go to the connection settings, switch to SLIP and then switch back to PPP I can reconnect without rebooting (obviously this re-initialises the protocol).

The only reason I hesitate rolling back ActiveSync is because I installed 3.7.1 back in January and this problem has only manifested in the past month or so.

And, to answer your question about the frog, when the error occurs both green lights remain on the modem.
