Guest kyan Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 First off, greetings to all in the forum! I've just acquired my first smartphone - Orange SPV E200. And part of the reason why I'm posting this is because I'm overwhelmed. (The phone must be too smart for me.) A lil introduction about me, I'm 18 this year, name's Kyan and I reside in Singapore. (That tiny red dot on the map.) I've swept thru the forums and I know for a fact that I will be asking the same questions but I need more clarification. (Pardon me.) Guess I need a walkthrough or sometime. Was just wondering, I've a bluetooth dongle and I want to know if I can sync my phone to my pc without the use of the usb cable and such. If its possible, could someone pls enlighten me? I'm throughly confused by the COM ports and all. I just wanted to send pictures from the phone to my pc and I can't seem to do so. Must I have this SmartExplorer app in my phone or PC for me to do so? Also would like to know how do I install apps into my phone? Many thanks to all who replies!
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Welcome to the site kyan :D and congratulations on your Smartphone purchase  I'll let others help you with Bluetooth as I haven't used it yet. You don't need Smart Explorer but the phone is so much better if you install it. Most things you do to customise your phone will use it in one way or another. So, in other words, yes, you do really need it ! The easiest way to install things onto the phone is to use MS ActiveSync to copy the installation file to your phone. If .exe installer - run from PC when connected If .cab - copy to Storage Windows Start Menu and then find the icon in the Programs menu and click to install You'll need to application unlock your phone first, and the best way is to use the Orange developers site here : http://developer.orangews.com/orgspv/comdef.aspx Then have a good read of the forum where you'll find answers to all your questions ;)
Guest gpcarreon (MVP) Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Along installing application...(.cab extension) You may also use MoDaCo Smartrun or SmartCab by egavoille. Those are PC programs which will let you simplify cab installation to phone. Once installed, all you have to do is connect phone to PC via ActiveSync, highlight the cab file in PC, right click mouse, choose 'Install to SPV' then finally choose directory where you want to install the app (Phone or Storage Card). Guest kyan Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Hey guys! Thanks for replying me! Managed to install SmartExplorer and it works like a charm! Only grouse is the prompt asking me to register. Do I have to pay? Took Disco Stu's advice of searching the forum for answers and now I'm ready to rock the world with my Smartphone! :D Btw, the e200 isn't sold locally in Singapore and hence another qns for you guys. Does the set comes with the earpiece/headset of any sort? And does it come with a memory card? Thanks for helping me guys! ;)
Guest Maverick Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Does the set comes with the earpiece/headset of any sort? And does it come with a memory card? Yep.. It comes with headphones and a memory card.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Managed to install SmartExplorer and it works like a charm! Only grouse is the prompt asking me to register. Do I have to pay? You do not have to pay but if you want to help the author develop his applications further then for the small price, register then you do not get the nag screen come up every so often.
Guest kyan Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 That's funny. I have no headset and just a dummy Mem card. Duped? Can I get rid of the naggy screen w/o registering?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Can I get rid of the naggy screen w/o registering? No and as I said it does not cost much so help the developer or put up with the screen :D
Guest kyan Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Oh oops misread your post! sorry about that! Pardon my asking but can we record a whole mp3 to use as ringtone? Or is the max length 30 secs?
Guest squall Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 firstly i believe that only .wav and wma files can be used as ringtones. The file can be as long as you like, however the tone will only play for as long as the phone has an incoming call. The time an incoming call will ring before being diverted/ cancelled automatically is set by the network provider normally to around 30 seconds.
Guest kyan Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Oh yes i should have clarified that only .wav and wma files can be used for ringtones. MIDIs too if I'm not wrong. pardon my haste to post. Currently am using Sound Recorder to convert my mp3s to .wav files and the limit is 30 secs. Any way to get around it? And is it possible to assign a specfic ringtone to a specific contact? If yes, how? Thanks!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 You can assign specific ringtones for contacts but you have to place the tones in IPSMApplication DataSounds folder. To assign the actual tone all you have to do is edit the contact and near the bottom of the list is the entry for cusom ringtone.
Guest kyan Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Yepp! Managed to find the option after much meddling around! Thanks for the quick reply! Yet a few qns. Did a search regarding this but came up with limited results. Wanted to know how I can transfer all my SIM contacts to the phone. Preferably w/o having to dwnload or install any program. But if its totally neccessary, I will. How does one install .cab files onto the e200? Downloaded the PocketMVP and it comes in the form of a .cab file. Am at a loss of what to do! Thanks yet again!
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 CAB files - see my first post   I actually created a "To Be Installed" folder in the Start Menu to put things in to be ....umm..installed !
Guest kyan Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Hahaha! That's a first! :D I've tried to follow and i end up with the following error msg: pocketmvp.cab failed to install on your device. Perhaps it is because I didn't unlock my phone? I've been to the website to unlock and followed thru with all the necessary steps. If i'm supposed to get a message notifying me that my phone is unlocked, well, i haven't got that. Has it got to do with the fact that I'm residing in Singapore hence the inability to unlock the phone? Sorry for being so noobish.
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Hmmm..someone else has been having problems with PocketMVP. I thought Smart Explorer was unsigned so it sounds as if you're phone is unlocked. Perhaps it wasn't locked in the first place. Hopefully pzee will help you with this, as he's also outside Europe
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 There is a Signed version of Smart Explorer available.
Guest kyan Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 The Smart Explorer works just fine. I've just reset the phone and now I can't seem to play songs (mp3 format via WMP) in my e200. Any reason why? Is it due to some removal of a program by the reset? Is there any way to see if the phone is unlocked? And any way to check the memory status of the phone? The replies and help are much appreciated!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 The best way to see your memory status is to use Task Manager This is available from the www.binarys.com who also make Smart Explorer.
Guest kyan Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Apparently upon running Task Manager (kudos to the developers of such a wonderful app!), i found out that my IPSM folder has an error. I'm assuming this is not normal. Any help? Or what are the implications towards that?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 Sounds like you are not using the latest version for the E200 as the E200 does not have an IPSM folder but a folder called Storage.
Guest kyan Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Well upon using Active Sync, i can find the folder Storage in my e200. However when i copy mp3s to my phone and try to play them, an error message pops up telling me that the file can't be found. I did a search and have come to understand that songs and such should be stored in Storage->App Data->Sounds. I did just that but to no avail? What am i doing wrong?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 If you are refering to using them as ringtones, the E200 does not support mp3 as ringtones.
Guest kyan Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Nope not as ringtones but for pure entertainment.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 They should not be in the location Application DataSounds You should place them on your Storage card. Only ringtones should be in the location above. It's best to keep your music off the phone to save the phones memory.
