Guest Jandy Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Hi there, New to the forum, new to Smartphones too. I read most of the posts (threads?) before i decided to write this, so I hope it has original content. Like any new user I've been on the internet night and day downloading apps and freeware for about a month solid since I got my new toy. (Its an MPX 200 on Orange). Anyway, I just got a more recent version of Smartexplorer_EN (2.0b5), to replace 2.0b1. When I try to delete the old version, it doesn't allow it. What I'd like to know specifically is: Would this be solved by a Hard Reset, and subsequent re-installation? What data would remain after a Hard Reset? I heard that my phone would lose some of the functionality/software that came installed with it, such as IA Caller ID. When is it necessary to perform one (hard reset)? Is there another way of deleting files which are not deletable in the obvious or expected method? I'm also interested to know what people with similar phones top software recommendations would be? I currently have: Imeter, Smartexplorer, Taskmanager, Freemem, SmartSS and SmartTones, which are all excellent. Games? Sorry for being long-winded, I actually have lots more to ask, but will save for another time. Info Overload! Cheers, Jandy
Guest gpcarreon (MVP) Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Hi there. Welcome to the site. I'll just give you my recommended software, the rest of your queries I'll leave to users using mpx200. ...Sprite Backup software is a must-have mate. You'll be able to backup then restore your phone's best configurations with Sprite. All the best softwares you'd soon install in your phone...those softwares they'll recommend in this thread ... would be backed up by this powerful software. :D Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest ferret Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Try closing Smart Explorer before trying to uninstall the latest version, this can cause a problem sometimes. A hard reset would solve this problem but it's probably a little extreme for this situation! A hard reset will take the phone to the out of box state. It will revert back to as it was when you first switched it on. The things you will loose are  SMS  Emails  Contacts  Appointments  Programs installed on the phone (SD Card will remain unchanged) Shortcuts to apps you've installed yourself regardless where you've installed them  Edited profiles and sounds  Custom Ring Tones stored under Application Data  Your T9 library  Some other things I've forgot to mention .... Everytime I hard reset I always manage to forget to back something up! You shouldn't lose any applications that a stored in ROM (ie came pre installed on the phone) Installing lots of apps does slow the phone down eventually (just like a PC) so it's up to you if you decided to do a periodic hard reset. Some reasons some files don't delete are  The program is still running in the background  The phone isn't application unlocked (click on OTA to find out how) Try deleting the file through explore in Active Sync Games wise, rumour has it Eclipse is quite good.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 You will lose the preinstalled apps when you hard reset an mpx200, but they are available on the CD :D The only one worth reinstalling is the MMS software as without it you wil not be able to send and recieve any mms. Personally I do not like the software as it slows the phone down so I have chosen not to install it as I do not use mms anyway. On a final mms note if you decide to install the app again remember this is one app that must be installed to the phone and not the storage card.
Guest comebackdx Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 To complement your existing software, I'd recommend - xBar 2.x by Xetra - allows you to switch between running apps, and a nice touch is that you can call up the program by assigning it to voice notes button. It's available from Handango.com. Surreal Start by SpaceMonkey - this is a replacement for the program menu, and uses the T9 dictionary functionality to narrow down the program name, just like searching for contacts. It's available to download at Modaco, and for more information check out http://www.surrealservices.co.uk/
Guest ferret Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 You will lose the preinstalled apps when you http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?p=97945#97945>Hard Reset an mpx200, but they are available on the CD :D Nerver knew that, cheers awarner.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Best thing to do with an mpx200 hard reset and get all the junk off, then install some decent apps like Smart Explorer and Task Manager as the ones that come with the phone are not exactly the best.
Guest Jandy Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Cheers guys, I have everything backed up on my comp, and like you say, most of the apps are on the CD (Which I forgot). Might as well try a hard reset, as I want to have as little as poss in my phone mem, and buy a bigger SD card. What is a good price though? My local hardware shop has reasonable prices I think, 64MB £21.00, 128MB £32.90, 256MB £44.65 and 512MB £101.05 (VAT included). What size would be best? At those prices I'd be tempted to go 256, but I'd like to check before spending my student loan.... :D Oh, and I got that Xbar program, but I'm saving installing it till I free up some memory. I tried deleting the Smartexplorer file through activesync, and through settings/remove progs. I made sure that it wasn't running in the background too, but it still won't delete.....any more ideas?
Guest Jandy Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 Have deleted it now, copied the files to my SD, deleted from phone, installed new, deleted old - sorted! Awarner mentioned losing the MMS software, and I want to too, but will not delete from my phone.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 You will need to Hard Reset to wipe the phone and get rid of the mms software plus the other preinstalled apps. It's one thing I always prefer to do then I can configure the phone the way I want to :D
Guest macpegg.uk Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 i read that im supposed to click on "hard reset" but it does`nt re-direct me!!! the cursor just hover`s over it..lol
Guest Disco Stu Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 If you click on the words Hard Reset you should get taken to the MoDaCo page with the instructions. You could try right-clicking, Copy Shortcut, paste into the address box above and hitting Go. What phone do you have, macpegg.uk ? If you have an E200 then the function "Clear Storage" (may be in Accessories folder) does the same thing.
Guest macpegg.uk Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 it does`nt give the option to cop shortcut, it does`nt even highlight!!
Guest macpegg.uk Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 i have the e200, its my m8 who needs to know for the mpx 200. thx
